Green Bay - Maybe the Packers should bench OLB Nick Perry more often.

The 2012 first-round pick found himself on the bench in place of Mike Neal when the defense took the field against the Detroit Lions and until Clay Matthews was removed from the game in the second half, he saw mostly spot duty.

Perry did not throw the towel in after getting benched. Instead he sacked Lions QB Matthew Stafford twice, knocked him down another time, forced a fumble and finished with five tackles. It was by far the best game of his 10-game pro career.

The benching probably didn't have as much to do with his performance as opportunity did.

I'm starting to like our OLB rotation. Neal is finally finding a position and by shedding weight, should stay injury free (crossing fingers).

The one thing that was noticeable about Perry's performance was that he seemed more comfortable rushing from the right side than the one he usually plays. Perry played the right side in college and it might just seem more natural to him.

Could it be something so simple that was hampering him? I know Matthews has the right and depending on the severity of his thumb injury but he can rush from just about anywhere standing up.

Detroit's Ts suck, so I'm not getting too excited.

Still, they did what they were supposed to do, and they're both still ascending as players.

Though of course you do have to give Cutler some of the credit for the Lions points but still, the OTs held the Bears DL off for what was probably 40 drops backs back Stafford.

Does anyone think that Perry plays better on the right side rather than the left side? I saw him go on Matthews side a couple times and he caused some havoc. Infact I think he got both his sacks on that side.

In the base defense, I think he should continue to work at LOLB though. In Nickel and Dime, more of the right side.

But he played well enough at ROLB, that I kind of want to see them let Perry focus there. And rotate Matthews around trying to put him on the RT and/or worst OL instead of the LT every time.

Also Neal looked better in this game against the RT. Which is interesting seeing as Perry looked better against the LT.
