GREEN BAY — Sean Richardson and Jerel Worthy both got the news they were hoping for Saturday, as the Green Bay Packers activated both players from the physically unable to perform list. Both players could be active for Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings as well.

To make room for them on the 53-man roster, cornerbacks Casey Hayward (hamstring) and James Nixon (knee) were placed on season-ending injured reserve.

The Packers announced the moves Saturday afternoon.

"It's great to have them on the field. These guys haven't been on the field for quite some time. I know it was refreshing for them both," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said of the pair when they began practicing. "They're excited. We've just got to go through these couple of weeks and make sure they're right. This is clearly a medical hurdle that both these guys can get over. They were good young players the last time they were on the field for us. I'm hopeful that we can get through this process."

Saturday, they officially did.

Worthy, a defensive end who was a second-round pick from Michigan State a year ago, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the regular-season finale at Minnesota last year and underwent surgery in January. Worthy saw action in 14 games last season, with four starts, and registered 23 tackles and 2.5 sacks.

"Long time coming," Worth said last week. "It was a long road, because days you always feel like you're making strides, sometimes you may break even for that day, sometimes you may not be able to push through for that day. But you just got to stick with it. It's a long process and it's something that teaches you to really appreciate the position you are in as a player and be grateful for being at this level."

Richardson, a safety who made the roster as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Vanderbilt last season, suffered a neck injury that required single-spinal fusion surgery of the C5 and C6 vertebrae. The Packers sent him to five specialists and all five doctors cleared him to return to the field. Richardson saw action in five games last season and recorded one tackle on defense and four more on special teams.

"It's a blessing. It's been a long journey," Richardson said. "To finally get back out there, it felt like I was a kid again. Guys were asking me how I felt. I said I felt like a kid at a candy store. It was great.

"I always kept faith and stayed positive. Couldn't have done it without the support I had. It's a great feeling. It's great to be back."

Hayward played in just three games (hamstring) after finishing third in the NFL defensive rookie of the year voting last year. He originally injured his hamstring the week before training camp opened, causing him to miss most of camp. He returned in time for the Aug. 23 preseason game against Seattle and promptly reinjured the hamstring. He returned against Minnesota on Oct. 27 but injured the hamstring again against Philadelphia on Nov. 11.

Hayward finished the season with seven tackles and one pass breakup.

Nixon, who was slowed by a knee injury throughout training camp, opened the season on the practice squad but was promoted to the 53-man roster on Oct. 7. He left last Sunday's game at the New York Giants with a knee injury.

The Packers have now activated three of the four players who opened the season on the PUP list, having brought 2011 first-round pick Derek Sherrod onto the 53-man roster on Nov. 5. Rookie offensive lineman JC Tretter started practicing this week after suffering a broken ankle in the first organized team activity practice of the offseason in May.

This sin't very surprising,

Packers just trying to find enough healthy bodies to fill out the roster.

Nixon and Hayward go to IR,.

Really don't know how much Worthy or Richardson can contribute this week, but they are healthy bdies that can come in if needed.

At least they are back practicing and maybe will be able to contribute in the near future.

Yeah, this means they haven't practiced yet right? Geez, I wouldn't think in that case they would be activated for this game but hey, these things always confuse me.

Glad Worthy is back. No such thing as too many quality d-linemen.

Yeah saw that they could still practice on PUP. The whole PUP rules, all that stuff, just confuses the daylights outta me.

Can't wait to see what Richardson can bring. I don't know if he'll contribute at all but it would be a good story if he came into the fold sometime this year and give us a spark.

Also excited for Worthy. I really wanna see what this guy can do. 9 Defensive Linemen on a team! Never seen that before with us.

It is kind of interesting that Richardson comes back from spinal surgery but yet we didn't let Collins and most likely Finley come back.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

Zero2Cool (3h) : I'm not sure how to kill the draft order just yet so it's not so confusing.
Mucky Tundra (13h) : *to be able
Mucky Tundra (13h) : and because it's not a dynasty league (which makes a lot more sense to be ability to trade picks)
Mucky Tundra (13h) : Oh I know; I was just exploring and it blew my mind that you could trade picks because of the whole reordering thing
Mucky Tundra (13h) : Zero, I think I preferred my offer: your 1st for my 15th rounder
Zero2Cool (14h) : Keep in mind, we do a draft reorder once all members locked in
Zero2Cool (14h) : You can have my 12th Rd for your 2nd round
Mucky Tundra (15h) : Hey i didn't know we could trade picks in fantasy
Mucky Tundra (3-Aug) : Update: Rock has tried a cheese curd, promises it's not his last

Martha Careful (2-Aug) : Congratulations Sterling Sharpe. He was terrific and I loved watching him play.
beast (2-Aug) : I believe it's technically against the CBA rules, but Jerry just calls it a simple unofficial chat... and somehow gets away with it.
beast (2-Aug) : Jerry Jones is infamous for ̶n̶e̶g̶o̶t̶i̶a̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ chatting with players one on one... and going around the agent.
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Oo just saw a blurb saying that Dallas negotiated directly with Parsons and not through his agent
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : I assumed that both guys will get paid, just a matter of when or how we get there
Zero2Cool (1-Aug) : McLaurin nor Micah going anywhere. They will get money
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : the Synder years or do they take care of one of their own?
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Do the Commanders risk losing a top WR with an emerging QB just because he's turning 30 and potentially risk damaging the rebuild from
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Turns 30 this September, plays at a high level and Washington has some cap space I believe
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : More interesting is Washington with Terry McLaurin
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : I would imagine Dallas will resolve this issue with a truckload of money
Zero2Cool (1-Aug) : Micah pulling a Myles with trade request
beast (1-Aug) : Packers should make some cheese forks

Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : database is on new host, eventually website will follow
Mucky Tundra (30-Jul) : Zero, regarding Ewers, you are correct.
Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : Sadly, this might be our life for awhile. I could put it on another host, but seems it was slower, although more stable
beast (30-Jul) : How long will it be down?
beast (30-Jul) : RIP site 😭
Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : Site will die, I have to restart it.
Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : Quinn stinks. Lot of underthrows. (my guess)
beast (30-Jul) : How did Quinn Ewers effect where Golden was drafted?
dfosterf (30-Jul) : All I've experienced was late at night or early morning. I just figured you were doing something in the background
Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : Site sure seems to be down more than up
dfosterf (29-Jul) : 50 cent hookers? I'm moving to Green Bay. I thought it was just real estate that was more affordable there. 😂
Zero2Cool (29-Jul) : Sure seems site going down more than 50¢ hooker
