Olshansky is... lazy. we don't need that. I'm sure Ted doesn't want that. He'd rather spend a little less or spend a little more on a player that works hard all the time.

I'm not surprised that we're interested in him, I mean his presence at LDE helped DeMarcus Ware get 20 sacks this season and 14 the previous. He would definitely help Kampman out. His size allows him to be flexible enough to play at DT in the 4-3 too.

However, im pretty sure that Ted Thompson is just gauging interest, to see what a guy like Canty would be earning so he can find out the market value for that position. Chances are he will be far too pricey for us but at least he would have a good idea what to expect.

We all knew that DE was a position we are going to look at in free agency since there are so few top quality 3-4 DE's in the draft. It's an important position that needs quality and depth.

Igor Olshansky is probably the 2nd best DE available in the draft, he's only an inch smaller than Canty which is insignificant but he would come at a much better value which i'm sure Ted Thompson is aware of. I think Olshansky and interested teams are waiting to see what Canty would get so they can figure out what sort of offer would be acceptable for Olshansky.

I think if Ted Thompson has listened to the details of what his agent says it will take and still wants him in GB then it's gone beyond gauging.

As warhawk said...They called the agent Thursday night and found out round figures of a contract..

He was almost ready to ink a deal in Washington?

full article

Cantys near-deal with the Redskins included guaranteed money of about $20 million. That suggests he could be in a for a deal that averages $7 million to $8 million and has guarantees in the $15 million to $20 million range.

So to me that does not seem to be a ton of $$

Even saying they want him in ASAP after Seattle tells me that this is someone they want and are okay with his $$ demands

Look at Kampmans contact he signed in 05

source for Kamp

Aaron Kampman's contract with the Packers is for four years and $21 million.
It's a good deal for both sides because Kampman will make $12 million guaranteed. It's the rare contract is structured in a way to make it better for the player than it appears.

So Canty was supposedly going to get guarantee of 15 to 20 mill, and Kamp got $12 mill 3 years ago..

I think this very well could be done

I think that could just be disinformation to put off interested teams. If you look at him and his body, that suggests he spends alot of time working out and conditioning his body....that doesnt sounds like laziness. He has been a starter for the Chargers in every season since 2004. If he had attitude problems they would've tried to trade him a long time ago. He was part of the defensive line that helped Merriman get lots of sacks.

I believe that the reason why they haven't re-signed him is because they have committed alot of cap space to re-sign Sproles and Tomlinson.

that's a fair assessment megatron. What you're saying isn't necessarily at odds with what I think, and I do admit that "lazy" wasn't the right word to use. There are many players in the league that aren't as interested in football as an NFL player "should". Players like Kampman, Donald Driver, Mark Tauscher do nothing but think about football. This adds to their physical attributes. There are also players like Julius Peppers aren't as interested in football, and though they have unbelievable physical attributes, they don't play up to their potential. I would put Olshansky in this group.

Yeah, i would put him in that group too. It's funny that a small paragraph from jsonline.com about Olshansky's so called laziness can cause such a massive change of opinion about him from packer fans.

We all put him in our mock drafts and all of a sudden nobody wanted him cos a small paragraph said he was lazy.

I found that funny to be honest and decided to treat that rumor with a pitch of salt.

Olshansky is not in the draft. he was drafted by san diego in 2004

edit: or are you talking about 2004 mock drafts?

sorry, my mistake...sometime when i look at other people's mock drafts they also include free agency moves as well. I was referring to that.

for as much time as i spend doing "packer stuff", i pay almost no attention to the draft. it's just too much "data" for me to wrap my mind around, lol. there's no way i'd be able to spend enough time to learn as much about college players as i'd like, so i don't even try. lol. plus, i get to laugh at all the people who get so worked up about the draft, like... lol. this video never gets old.

Forget the "I'm not 100% football-oriented" thing. We drafted A.J. Hawk because he's a student of the game, and he's average at best. We drafted Brian Brohm because he supposedly has Peyton Manning smarts, but Matt Flynn is higher on the depth chart.

With proven players, you gotta look by little things. Anything can change as long as you have good coaching.

It was like when people complained about the Woodson 50M signing. Sure, it seemed like a boatload of money, but the nature about it was he was better than Carroll.

Olshansky and Canty, just because of 3-4 experience, are better than Jolly and Harrell--and neither one will sign a contract worth more than 30M.
