Report: Patriots might want to trade with Packers
By Greg A. Bedard of the Journal Sentinel
Apr. 24, 2009 11:12 a.m.

Ted Thompson may have found his trading partner.

Sports Illustrated's Peter King is reporting the New England Patriots are attempting to trade into the top 10 in order to likely pick LSU defensive end Tyson Jackson.

So far the Jaguars at No. 8 have rejected the deal, which would be for a second-round pick.

From King:

Busy morning. The Patriots are trying to move up into the top 10 of the draft -- but low in the top 10. Executives from two teams tell me New England offered its first-round pick and middle of three second-round picks (the 23rd and 47th picks overall) to Jacksonville for the eighth pick in the draft. Jacksonville GM Gene Smith, I'm told, said no ... but I also hear the Patriots might be looking to Green Bay at nine to move as well.

Who might be the object of their affection? I'm told it may be a surprise, because smart money would say the target is LSU's Tyson Jackson, the best 3-4 defensive end in the draft and the only end versatile enough to play every spot on the defensive line. But I'm not sure it's Jackson. I think it might be an offensive player. Sorry to be so cryptic, but I truly don't know.

The Patriots are Fort Knox on draft weekend -- and, for that matter, on every weekend. Remember last year? New England traded down from seven to 10 in the first round and got the object of its affection, Tennessee linebacker Jerod Mayo, and no one ever knew Mayo was their man.

It makes infinite sense that New England would want the eighth or ninth pick, because the line of demarcation between sanity and insanity in the top 10 is right there. Check out the money that each of the players between six and 10 in last year's draft would earn with minimum play-time incentives in their five-year contracts:

6. Vernon Gholston, Jets $32.5 million
7. Sedrick Ellis, New Orleans $32 million
8. Derrick Harvey, Jacksonville $23 million
9. Keith Rivers, Cincinnati $19 million
10. Jerod Mayo, New England $16 million

It figures that New England would be targeting the eighth pick, or ninth. It's called being ahead of the curve.

My question would be this: If 3-4 maven Bill Belichick wants Jackson at No. 9, shouldn't the Packers, a newly minted 3-4 team? If the Packers were still a 4-3 team like the Jaguars, it would be a no-brainer. The Patriots are likely trying to jump ahead of the Packers for that reason. But Thompson should be able to drive up the price for that pick considering he could just stay and pick Jackson.

Will not happen. Ted has his eye on two defensive players that will be gone in the top 15. It will take more than a 2nd to get us out of the top 15 🙂

The Patriots are up to their annual trickery. When it is this close to the draft be veeeery curious about reports like this.

Uhhh the Patriots better offer up more than that. Horrible value. I'll take Wilfork and their 1st though. 😃

What if Ted is targeting Peppers and wants to use the 23 in trade?

I'm not saying I'm for it, because I personally am not, I'm just saying that if he was thinking along those lines it would be one of the ways to go about it.

End result:

Peppers and a second (47th) for our 9.... (Plus obscene $$$, of course)

Now, what I WOULD be for, I'm pretty sure, (no way of knowing until we are "on the clock") is the Pats 23rd and 34th--- not the 47th.

We would lose so much value in the Patriots trade, we could easily work something out with better value and still trade a later 1st pick away for Peppers.

Eeesh... 23 seems pretty low, unless we're positive that either anyone we really want will be gone by 9 or that some very-desired guy is going to slide a good ways.

And I'm with dfosterf - 23 and 47 is NOT going to get it done. If we go all they way back to 23 I'd want their 34, for sure.

For the 23rd and 34th, I'd do it. We'd have the 23rd, 34th, and 41st picks in a mediocre talented draft. It would be perfect to be loaded in this area on the board.

First of all I think Jackson would be a good pick for us anyhow.

If that's the case the thing to do would be to pick him and then if NE wants him later they would have to give us the #34 AND we would know who's left on the board.
If there's somebody there Ted Thompson feels is just as good as Jackson for us then the #34 is a freebee.

There will be a lot of good players sitting at #34.

Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Packers sign CB Corey Ballentine
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : I'm not sure how to kill the draft order just yet so it's not so confusing.
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : *to be able
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : and because it's not a dynasty league (which makes a lot more sense to be ability to trade picks)
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Oh I know; I was just exploring and it blew my mind that you could trade picks because of the whole reordering thing
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Zero, I think I preferred my offer: your 1st for my 15th rounder
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Keep in mind, we do a draft reorder once all members locked in

beast (2-Aug) : I believe it's technically against the CBA rules, but Jerry just calls it a simple unofficial chat... and somehow gets away with it.
beast (2-Aug) : Jerry Jones is infamous for ̶n̶e̶g̶o̶t̶i̶a̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ chatting with players one on one... and going around the agent.
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Oo just saw a blurb saying that Dallas negotiated directly with Parsons and not through his agent
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : I assumed that both guys will get paid, just a matter of when or how we get there
Zero2Cool (1-Aug) : McLaurin nor Micah going anywhere. They will get money
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : the Synder years or do they take care of one of their own?
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Do the Commanders risk losing a top WR with an emerging QB just because he's turning 30 and potentially risk damaging the rebuild from
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Turns 30 this September, plays at a high level and Washington has some cap space I believe
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : More interesting is Washington with Terry McLaurin
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : I would imagine Dallas will resolve this issue with a truckload of money
Zero2Cool (1-Aug) : Micah pulling a Myles with trade request

Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : if PH dies, there is packerpeople com available
Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : database is on new host, eventually website will follow
Mucky Tundra (30-Jul) : Zero, regarding Ewers, you are correct.
Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : Sadly, this might be our life for awhile. I could put it on another host, but seems it was slower, although more stable
beast (30-Jul) : How long will it be down?
beast (30-Jul) : RIP site 😭
Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : Site will die, I have to restart it.
Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : Quinn stinks. Lot of underthrows. (my guess)
beast (30-Jul) : How did Quinn Ewers effect where Golden was drafted?
dfosterf (30-Jul) : All I've experienced was late at night or early morning. I just figured you were doing something in the background
Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : Site sure seems to be down more than up
