One of the problems with the league’s replay-review system is that, far too often, the “clear and obvious” standard gets forgotten when someone is looking at the visual evidence of a call that was made or not made. Recently, it seems that the bar could be getting higher.

And that could be a clue regarding the next step in the evolution of replay review.

This past weekend, there were multiple examples of plays that could have been overturned via replay review, but weren’t. Perhaps that’s happening because the league is trying to stay true to the “50 drunks in a bar” explanation of what it takes for a ruling on the field to be regarded as clearly and obviously wrong.

My wild interpretation of the article as follows:

Some believe the NFL is making an unofficial PR move to support the on the field referees, and demanding more video proof to overturn any call that they make.

Which will simply just piss the fans off even more when they think a ref was incorrect.

But NFL is more about good PR, than actually being accurate and fair.

Reviews take too long. If you need super slow motion then you're doing it wrong. Play it a few times and go with what ya see. This trying to see if a guy's foot is a millimeter in the side line is junk. If it's not obvious out of bounds, it's in bounds. Move along.

Honestly, if it takes slow-mo to change the call, the call shouldn't be changed. These guys are referees, not mechanical engineers. They don't need to measure with a micrometer, because in the end, they're just marking with chalk and cutting with an axe anyway. (A good spot is considered within a yard -- think about that.) Replays should be run at regular speed and the impression made off that.

I understand that they take the time to look at it to be "accurate" - but they fuck it up half the time anyway...

Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
