49ers coach Mike Singletary admitted on Tuesday that he made his first-round draft pick misty during an offseason OTA session.

Specifically, Singletary told Dan Patrick that rookie wideout Michael Crabtree was jogging on the practice field, despite not being cleared by doctors to participate. (Crabtree had surgery in March to repair a stress fracture in his foot.) So Singeltary told Crabtree to knock it off.

As Singletary explains it, Crabtree became "teary-eyed" because he really wanted to play.

But based on the explanation Singletary offered in the wake of the incident, we think the reality is that it was what Singletary said, and how he said it, that provoked the hurt bunny response from Crabtree.

If so, it should be interesting to see how Crabtree responds to getting busted in the chops by one of the truly tough guys who patrol NFL secondaries. Or, alternatively, to being called mean names by far men far meaner than Singletary.

Crabtree, Crybaby? I have to be honest, us not picking him doesn't bother me so much after reading this report. Come Sunday's that could change quickly though, lol.

He's still young. Of course, this isn't normal, but I wouldn't take too much out of it right now. Don't know how getting hit would be related to this either, but hey, makes for a fun article.

I was happy when we didn't draft him right at the start. I know it didn't make Dhazer too happy, and I would've loved to see Foster blow a fuse, but this is what bottered me most.

Injury Report

2008: Suffered a right ankle sprain after twisting his leg returning a second quarter kickoff vs. Texas A&M (10/18). ... Left the Kansas clash (10/25) with a left foot strain and after re-injuring his ankle...Had to leave the field several times to have his right ankle re-taped vs. Texas (11/01)...Did not play in the second half vs. Baylor (11/29) due to a high right ankle sprain...Wore a boot to help his right ankle heal, missing several practices leading up to the Cotton Bowl vs. Mississippi.

2009: At the NFL Combine, doctors discovered a slight stress fracture in his left foot and the injury required early March surgery to insert a screw. Doctors believe Crabtree will be sufficiently recovered in time for training camp this summer. After doctors found the slight stress fracture, they conducted more testing on Crabtree, including a bone scan that revealed that the injury happened only recently, possibly during training for the Combine.

It's not even that big a list, but it's all on his ankles and feet. I think that when he has those Cardinals' safeties or Seattle's LBers hanging on his feet, he'll be injured in no time. Teams ought to be looking for that a little by now.

And not running a 40 never makes me happy. He might have some special reasons, but that usually doesn't bode well for his straigth line speed. (I know, I know. Rice did well without it, Fitzgerald is doing well without it, but it's still a great asset)

I would have loved for us to have picked him, IF he was going to be filling the hype about him. Otherwise, no way. We have a nice WR corp now and I don't think it'd be a good pick.

he became teary eye because he wanted to keep working out, so thats a bad thing? Well i guess we are spoiled we have guys like Bustin that just collects his checks and eats his ribs and laughs all the time without getting on the field 😛

You mention his injuries but also forget to mention that he doesn't miss games. He's a gamer and people will see that. Would have been great in Green and Gold but hey then i would have had to praise Ted Thompson and i just can't do that lol
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

I asume that they meant to imply that Singletary shouted at him or something and that that nearly made him cry.

As for the injuries, I've made my stance clear and I'm glad we didn't take him. Like I said as well, though, it would've been funny to see Foster blow a fuse and see you gloat for the next 3 months.

Michael Crytree: "Coach Singletary, I tried to run my pass route, just like you told me to, but that mean man wouldn't let me, and I wanna go back to college where thay were nicer to me, and I don't think that is fair, and my mom told me you guys aren't very nice here and now I believe her, wah, wah wah."

Coach Singletary: "Now now, son...Don't let anyone see you carrying on like this... I'll have to hold another press conference explaining to them how I tried to explain to you that there is no crying in football."

I'da blown a gasket, not a fuse.

:thumbleft:

(Dhaze was correct about what got Michael misty-eyed, and I AM just kiddin' around...I wish the kid all the best, we just plain flat could not afford to take him at the expense of leaving Raji out there...it was a great decision, IN MY OPINION.)

I don't see it as a big deal.......i don't think it's "sniff" right to be picking on him because he wants to play.......'waaaahhhh!!!!"

Seriously, I'd want a guy that WANTS to be out there. That shows the kid cares! So he got emotional.......BF cried, didn't he? And i bet most of us (not ME of course, cause i'm a HE MAN!) teared up watching his retirement speach. (The FIRST one, i mean)

(Who am i kidding.......i cried during E.T.!)LOLOL!!!

I don't think it's a terrible thing. When Davis balled when he was drafted, I could understand that. But to tear up because you can't continue to work out? That's just not right.

There's nothing wrong with crying, not saying there is. There's just times when you need to be mature and adult about things. If he can not control his emotions THIS early in the stage, how is he going to control his emotions on the field when he doesn't get the ball and he's wide open?

Again, I don't think this is HUGE or any real reason to knock him. I, personally, see it as a small red flag. On the flip side, how many OTHER players have done the same thing, but were not reported?

As for the Brett comments, stop it already. You have good intentions, many others do not. To close on the Brett subject, he cried because he thought it was his last game, dream over. There's a huge difference.

Don't care how mature he is as long as it doesn't....

A) effect his play on the field

B) disrupt the locker room

C) gets him in trouble with the law

Plus Mike Singletary is going to make more players cry. Crabtree won't be the last. That's just his style.

In retrospect, I would hate to look at the depth chart without the hope of Raji filling a major role in playing time. Yes that is more of an indictment of the depth (On Paper) along the defensive line than anything.

I liked the drama that it added to the draft for the Packers with Crabtree sitting there on the clock and Thompson saying he thought he was the best player in the draft.... kind of put the BPA theory to bed for the Packers... and more realistically a mixture of need and prospect potential..

As far as Mike making Micheal cry.. worst things have happened to rookies.. anyone remember the diaper comments made to the press about Larry Johnson.. and he turned in some pretty impressive years following it... anxious emotional rookie isn't the worst thing if he can keep it in check come Sunday's.
