What significance does this injury have on our team. For now I think we should pup him, but if the high ankle sprain is severe, maybe IR isn't a bad idea. That particular injury seems to linger and shutting a guy may be in his best interest.

Last I heard they say he will miss the last preseason game, and possibly week 1. If that is it then I wouldn't worry, if he is likely to miss 3-4 weeks, then I would look at the PUP for him. Get him healthy for the first half of the season or so, letting Sutton and Wynn cover, then bring back a fully healthy player for the second half push.

I think if it severe and it looks like one of those nagging injuries.. then IR might not be the worst road traveled if the Packers have as much faith in Sutton, Wynn and Lumpkin as some in the Packer fan base do.

As far as the PUP goes.. Rules Here.

Well maybe I don't know enough about what happen.... but why do you want to put him on the PUP or IR?

The only thing I think it did is up the chances of 4 RBs making the roster.

I can't fathom putting his entire his season down the drain because of a sprained ankle. PUP at max, that will probably be more than enough time for him to recover. You don't just put someone on IR just because you have guys to cover for him.

PUP rules.. Brandon isn't eligible.. This is from the link above...

So when talking in terms that "IF" Jackson will be "dogged" by this injury all season.. then IR might not be the worst idea.. that opens up a roster spot for another back or position.

Personally I think it is to soon to take such an approach.. but the medical staff would have a better insight on his condition.. just saying that the thought isn't a horrible one if the Packer indeed consider all 5 backs currently on the roster as being an effective player for them in 09.. also giving us the ability to "tuck" a player away for 2010.

There's been a lot of PUP list references in the news today so I thought I'd dust off some clarification of one of the most misunderstood eligibility rules in the NFL.

First and foremost, there are two PUP lists.

The PUP list that you may have seen in today's news stories refers to the 'Active PUP' list.

The Active PUP is for players that have some form of injury that will prevent them from starting training camp.

If placed on Active PUP, a player can rehab and participate in team meetings but cannot practice.

A player has to be placed on Active PUP before he begins training camp, so that's why you're seeing the stories popping up now.

A player on Active PUP can be removed from the list at any time during camp.

A player on Active PUP counts against the league mandated roster limit (currently 80).

And one of the most important rules, a player must be on Active PUP in order to be considered for Reserve PUP.

At the end of preseason, if an Active PUP player is still several weeks away from being able to play, the team may place him on Reserve PUP.

Reserve PUP players are not eligible to play for the first six weeks of the season.

Reserve PUP players do not count against the 53 man roster.

Reserve PUP players have a three week window after Week 6 to practice with the team but a roster decision must be made, either to activate to the 53 or to IR the player, within that timeframe.

If a player is activated off the Reserve PUP following Week 6, a roster move is required to make room . That's what happened on October 17, 2008 when Dunta Robinson was activated from Reserve PUP and Chris Taylor was placed on injured reserve.

From what I've been reading in various news sources, I would imagine the only Active PUP candidates for the Texans are Antwaun Molden and Travis Johnson.

If Molden doesn't start training camp on Active PUP, it's good news since Active PUP is typically a hedge against the possibility that the player won't be ready to go during the first few weeks of the regular season.

I was hoping for 4 RBs so this should make that more likely.

He can't be put on the PUP (wasnt on it before TC started) and IR seems a bit drastic.

But I could see why it would be tempting for the Pack to do so. It would allow us to carry Sutton and Wynn, try and stash Lumpkin on the PS and bring all 5 back next training camp.

But Jax has done well with the few carries he got last year and I was looking forward to seeing him progress this year.

Thanks for the clarification. I still feel the IR is too drastic for his injury.

As a few others have identified the injury to Jackson - especially if he's out for the start of the regular season - increases the likelihood that the Packers will go forward with 4 RBs. Ted Thompson's quote today that 'you keep your best players', perhaps alludes to this eventuality.

If those are the rules for PUP, how was the team able to put Harrell on it last year. I believe about this same time of the pre-season, after he wasn't able to get in for the first 3 preseason games.

I think there is a day or two Jackson could still be put on the list. The deadline goes off roster cut down which I think is coming soon.
