By the time Harris and Woodson leave the Packers Williams will be completely ready for a starting role - he's pretty close now. He still worries me when long passes are thrown his way, which was shown up when he started a few games last year, but he's got time on his side.

if he plays well every game until the bye week, I would assume they would quickly approach his agent about a contract extension.

The sooner the better. The longer they wait, the higher his cost is going to be, and I'm afraid he might get away if his asking price gets higher than what Ted thinks a DB is worth.

In Williams' defense, a lot of the yardage he gave up was due to not enough pressure on the opposing QB. You can't cover a WR forever.

I happen to like Williams a lot and I'm sure MM does too. He'll be a Packer in '10.

I remember when everyone hated Williams cuz he was 'holding out' aka skipping voluntary stuff so he could work out on his own (which was featured in the gazette as being a key reason hes so good).

But goooooooo Tramon!

Keeping Williams is essential, since the beginning of last season I thought that in a few years, our starters would be Williams and Lee, but now that Lee isn't turning out that well, if we lose Williams we're pretty much f'd.

I think we need to cut Lee some slack. When he has been in, last year and this, he wasn't terrible, and has been hit with some injuries. This years is not some hammy or something, he got hit in the knee.

Still think Lee with make it once he stays on the field and shows his stuff more.

Yeah, I think Williams is a lock to stay with the team. Moreso than Collins IMO. Mostly because he'll likely will ask for less money and be more patient. Also since Harris and Woodson are technically the starters we won't have to worry about the "Pro Bowl" tag on his name which always give players leverage to ask for more money. Williams is basically the Nickel corner until Wood or Harris retire. Since Wood and Harris can both play at a very high level still *knock on wood*.

Thompson's definitely improved us with starters and backups at DB. I also expect Williams to be one of his high-priority signings. But it takes two to sign.

Ted has a value he puts on each position, and if Williams' demands are higher than what Ted feels the position is worth, he has let the player walk rather than (what he considers) overpaying for a player. If Tramon feels he's worth more (or can get more from another team) than what Ted's willing to pay, then I can also see him walking.
