i think it was grant last nite who had a decent run going, saw a defender coming toward him & just ran out of bounds - i was pissed as hell!! nail the SOB & gain a few extra yards!!! other than that play, i thought he did better this game.

I don't understand how some want to blast the OL for our lack of protection, yet blast Grant for not gaining big yards. It is the same OL afterall.

I think it's the way Grant runs. He has no burst nor any breakaway speed. He's just kind of one of the players I guess. That's alright if you want to use a tandem IMO in the backfield, but not for a guy getting as many touches as he is.

GB could really use a compliment to Grant. C.J. Spiller from Clemson would be an example of someone in college that would be a nice fit.

Even Minnesota with AP has Chester Taylor.

Bad offensive line or not, Grant goes down way to easy. He never fights for extra yards either. Driver fights, scratches, and claws for extra yards, Grant goes down when someone breaths on him.

Agreed.

I'm sorry, but I'm not seeing Grant be decisive - he knows he's only got one tiny window with that dismal OL in front of him (God help us if he hasn't figured this out at this point), but he can't or won't pull the trigger. Any idiot should know you can't try dancing around back there, yet that's what I saw him do on multiple plays last night. Cut and run - that's how you run behind a ZBS. They're not designed to maul defenses and give the back time - they're designed for a one-cut-and-go back. I can't explain why, but Grant isn't acting like that kind of back this season.

I want to see Jackson getting some carries after the buy. I like Grant, but he's not getting the job done. Some of that is certainly the shitty OL, but some of it is him.

Yeah, that was a pretty great play, actually.

Grant doesn't win a whole lot of match-ups, but I've seen his effort often enough. When he's being held up, or actually stays on his feet, he tends to keep his legs moving, trying to carry the defenders with him. Maybe not often enough, but he does do it.

Maybe that's why we where so high on Sutton. He has one thing that Grant appears to miss. Balance. Sutton get hit and knocked around, but keeps his balance and, that way, can break some bad tackles. Grant seems to stumble over his own feet half the time.

I really wonder what happend between 2007 and 2008/9. He appeared to be running right through and over people in 2007 and then just fall down on every single hit after that. The hamstring injuy really wasn't that bad, right?

That said, I was somewhat impressed this week. I think that, if we have an O-line, this is the way we should approach game. Everyone's raving about setting up the pass with the run, but with the way our offense is build, we should do it the other way around and keep it balanced that way. Get the coverage to soften up and then run the back.

Bennett and Levens wheren't great backs, they just had some good years because of our dominant passing game. They themselfs wheren't Ahman Green-good. I think we have to see Grant the same way. But then really overpriced.

Yea he never fights, never tries an extra move, doesn't stretch the ball out for extra yardage and he falls way too easily. I just can't believe that we only have him and Wynn at RB right now too, it's a disaster.

I'm no Grant nut-hugger, but I honestly think we're watching different RBs. You talk as if Grant looks just like he did last year. Look, the production may be similar. I'll give you that. But Grant has more burst in his step. He's running hard.

The problem is our offensive line has managed to get even worse over the course of a year (losing Tausch doesn't help). Time after time he gets stuffed at the line because there's nothing there. We all know this isn't a Steven Jackson-esque player who can make something consistently out of absolutely nothing.
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

I would be happy if Grant was getting stuffed at the line. Most of the time, he is getting hit or having defenders around his feet 2 yards deep in the backfield.

It is the shitty ZBS. As soon as the defense sees the O take that first slide step, they know it is a run, and the LBers shoot every gap before the play ever has a chance to develop.

"porky88" wrote:

Grant isn't exactly getting a lot of touches. This week it was 11 carries, at 4.64 yards/carry (are we going to complain about that against the Queens daunted run D?), plus his 4 catches at 12.5 yards per. Everyone seems to cheer Grant on every time he gets a good run, only to find the actual hole in the line was created by penalty. Imagine if those holes were actually created from good blocking. I will be happy to get BJack back to compliment that production. Wynn has had his opportunities to steal touches from Grant but hasn't taken advantage of them.

I disagree with a lot of people about him not fighting for yards or falling to easy, I see the complete opposite. Seems to me lots of people still have a hangover from Grant last year.
