The big knock on Shannahan was he couldn't win w/o Elway and Davis...and in a very literal sense that's hard to dispute.

Gruden comes off as a little aloof to me at times (maybe just from listening to him broadcast too much) but at least the guy appears to give a damn if ST biffs a block on a punt, or has an unsportsmen like during a key point of the Vikings game.

Alot of players hated Holmgren too. Might not be a bad thing right now.

The worst part of watching this game was by the end of the third quarter you knew where it was headed, same football team different week. I wasn't even upset afterwards because it wasn't a shock I'm sad to say

Yep. You could see it coming like one of those sacks on a 7 step drop.

Put yourself in Thompson's position, folks. If he makes a head coaching change he's effectively saying it'll be 3 years before the Packers will be ready for a deep run into the playoffs.

If he hires a new head coach, that head coach is going to need to put his stamp on things in a big way. They're going to be system changes, personnel changes, philosophy changes, what have you.

How many coaches do you see taking the team, however good it might appear to be on paper, deep into the playoffs before the third year? I can remember two: Seifert and (choke) Switzer). And both those had teams without the kind of personnel weaknesses the packers have.

So, suppose Thompson is concerned about McCarthy having what it takes. If so, and if he's honest with himself, he knows it's likely that the new coach, whoever he is, is going to take more than a year to bring the team where it needs to be. So there's no gain to be had with letting McCarthy go now.

It just isn't going to happen now. It might happen at the end of the season. But it won't happen before then.

"ILikeThePackers39" wrote:

Assuming Thompson does something about the OL personnel (just bear with me - I'm not saying he will), as long as they brought in the right HC the team could easily turn around quickly next season. As for the rest of this season, realistically it's almost done - I'd love to see them beat Dallas, Pitt & the Ravens, and I'll be rooting them on the whole way, but at the moment that's severely unrealistic. Tampa's tougher than teams like the Browns, Lions and Rams, but they aren't a good team.

The reason to fire MmC before the season's out is to send a message that under achieving is unacceptable. Let Philbin run the offense the balance of the year, as far as I'm concerned - run the crap out of the ball and see if Grant can be the guy or not. You don't want to lose guys like Woodson, but being cool with mediocrity could do that.

They can improve on last season's record, and they can make valuable strides on defense, but I have a hard time believing they can make the playoffs after this game - playoff-caliber teams don't lose games like that.

If the new coach continued to run the WCO, it wouldn't be much of a problem. Inasmuch as the current regime runs the WCO.

Correction: They give lip service to the WCO. They don't really run the WCO.

Actually, NSD, I think the predecessor was in the shotgun a lot in 2007. But that's my notoriously bad memory.

GraveDigga, you're comment (you know which one) is making me consider suspending people for bringing up that bullshit. You might be the first casualty if it continues.

It's obvious the Packers have talent, at least I think so because we're able to play dominate games at times. I think consistency needs to come from coaching.

to add to this statement. that is true and why he hated it was because he thought there was too much risk involved in the long snap.

Ok, now i see which comment. Look, he's not the godfather. I don't have to kiss his ring. I don't have to pledge my loyalty to him. You think the problem is coaching. you think this team has the talent to dominate. Fine, i'm glad you have faith. I don't have that faith. I see a team with great talent other than an o-line which is hamstringing every aspect of our offense. Limiting our options, our playcalling and risking players safety. I see a pro bowl d-lineman who is lost out there trying to play linebacker because we didn't trade him. I see underacheivers in our front 7 and I see a GM who doesn't seem to know how or want to fix the problem.

But go ahead, ban me if you like. It is your site and you can choose to have people on it who think just like you. I realize this is serious business that must be taken seriously all the time and jokes should not be tolerated. I agree. Ban him!!

Furthermore, I find it quite funny that 90% of the forum now believe McCarthy needs to be fired. "Some on here" were saying this for a long, long time and were given shit for it and called fair weather fans and Favre lovers and other shit like that. I think it's really funny to see how people opinions change........just like that over a two week period. Even the most die hard MM/TT supporters over the past few years now believe he needs to be fired immediately.

I imagine that one day, people on here will be calling for TT's resignation, citing some of the issues that "some people" bring up and have been bringing up for a long, long time. But hey, maybe that day will never come. Who am I to question an NFL GM anyway. I may as well just not have an opinion and hope for the best.
