Steelers fan Zack Heddinger says he was blinded at a Chicago bar by Bears fans after some trash talking gone awry.

Heddinger was in the Windy City for the Steelers 17-14 loss to Chicago in Week Two.

"Basically, I guess, my buddies had gotten into an altercation and they offered a drink as a peacemaker from what I understand," Heddinger said.

That's where things get weird.

According to ABC4 in Pittsburgh, Heddinger passed out and his heart stopped four times after he was rushed to a local hospital. Initially, doctors just thought he was drunk. But they quickly suspected something else was up.

Police are now investigating the incident, and the local bar, Kitty O'Shea's, is fully cooperating. Doctors now believe his drink could have been spiked with toxic grain alcohol.

Heddinger says he can't remember what happened that day, but hasn't been able to see since. He's taking oxygen treatments to recover his part of his eyesight, but doctors aren't very hopeful.

"I don't think they tried to kill me. I think they tried to hurt me, but the killing came pretty close," said Heddinger.

Classy, very classy Bear fan.

I hope they catch 'em.

"drink spiked with toxic grain alcohol"

We might need Non for this one.

Are we talking "everclear" here, or something of a medical nature?

If it was everclear (the stuff they usually use for what, things like large punch bowls, yes?)

It borders on just a stupid prank (incredibly stupid, obviously, in retrospect)

If it was something else, then the criminality aspect goes up accordingly.

I might be splitting hairs, but I'm just trying to catch some of what may have been going on... Trying to "wrap around it" if you will.

As much as I want to say something about Bears fans in general (also duly noted that no one has) this is just something that one or more stupid people did, their fan affiliation isn't really relevant to the stupidity, imo

Edit:

Ethanol is a grain alcohol.. like the crap they mix in with the fuel these days..

Curious to what the substance was and why it would be present at a bar?

If he is blind, they probably spiked his drink with methanol, though I'm surprised that the article didn't mention finding it in his system. Perhaps the tox reports haven't come back yet.

There's nothing special about ethanol. It's the normal alcohol found in every alcoholic beverage.

They were in a bar in Illinois.

That would make 190 proof everclear legal and available.

To me, the most likely "toxic grain alcohol" candidate is in fact everclear.

So, the guy orders a shot of everclear and pours it into the victim's drink when the victim is taking a leak, or something.

People DO do shots of that stuff, but they are "not right" imo.

I've never heard of ethanol causing blindness, however. Tunnel vision is a side effect of alcohol intoxication, but persistent blindness isn't, as far as I know. Now blindness is a well-known side effect of methanol (wood alcohol) consumption.

Methanol is the active ingredient in Sterno. It's also the additive required by federal law to "denature" pure ethanol to keep opportunistic chemistry students from tippling in the lab.

Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Oo just saw a blurb saying that Dallas negotiated directly with Parsons and not through his agent
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : I assumed that both guys will get paid, just a matter of when or how we get there
Zero2Cool (1-Aug) : McLaurin nor Micah going anywhere. They will get money

dfosterf (30-Jul) : All I've experienced was late at night or early morning. I just figured you were doing something in the background
