Looking at that, it's probably a done deal that we trade Kampy. I'm going to miss him, but it's best for the team and best for Kampy's career to be elsewhere. I just hope he doesn't go to the Cows.

Now, I'll admit my ignorance here. Can someone please explain how long we'll be paying for KGB and Brohm?

Brohm's rookie contract was more than likely a 4 year deal, and his signing bonus was most likely spread out throughout the 4 years, so he will probably remain on our payroll for the next 2 seasons.

It would be the same deal with KGB, he would remain on our payroll until his contract was set to expire, we'd have to pay him the remainder of his signing bonus. I have no idea when KGB's deal is set to expire, however.

They should both be off our books next year. The signing bonus collapses into the season the player was cut.

I don't pretend to know all the ins and outs of the Packers financial situation, but it appears to me that if a new CBA is put in place just prior to the start of freeagency that there will be alot of pressure on the Packers as well as other teams to move faster than normal to make deals done.

What concerns me with that scenario is that Ted Thompson moves at a snails pace with virtually any decision.
Hopefully he is going to be prepared to jump on the correct side of the important most commanding issues posthaste this year.

I think the Packers sign and trade Kampman. I wonder whether Ted would prefer a draft pick or player in return. I wouldn't mind adding Kampman to our 1st round pick to jump up in the draft and land a top safety or offensive lineman.

As much as i like Kampman, he's been one of my favorite players the past 5 or so years, i really don't think he is a great fit for the 3-4 this time in his career. He's an all-pro DE, or an average OLB. So i would welcome a trade.

However, it may be quite hard to get any real value for a player coming of a modest year and a serious injury, i think there is a decent chance the packers feel he is a better value to them ON the team, than for something like a 3rd or 4th round pick that they might be forced to take for him in this circumstances.

Now i could be a huge idiot and there might be a team willing to give up a first rounder, but i think its pretty rare to see a player with an injury like this have high trade value.

It is a weird comment to make, but I think many of us are in the same boat that we want to trade him because we like him. We would rather see him flourish in a better system for him, than be average in our 3-4 defense.

I wish someone would enlighten me as to how to sign an unrestricted free agent with a spread out signing bonus and then trade him for a second or third round draft pick.

We either sign Aaron and fit him in, or let him walk. It really is that simple. And if signed, what is fair compensation?

Funny you say that. I'm thinking the same thing, that I want him traded not only because it would help the Packers but also because it will help him personally to be on a team where his value can be used.

I guess it's not weird. We seem mostly to feel this way.

Franchise Tag

Corey Williams is a recent example as is Matt Cassel.

Eh, not exactly. Any trade of Kampman would be done via the Franchise Tag. Placing the tag on him would allow us to control his rights. After tagging him, the options would be to seek a trade partner (TT did this very successfully with Corey Williams) or sign him to a new contract. Failing either of those, by virtue of being franchised, Kampy would receive a one year deal worth the average of the top five paid LBs in the league. Last year that figure was $8.3 million. That's the risk of using the Franchise Tag - the possibility of ending up with an $8 million OLB that doesn't necessarily fit the system.
