Sometimes I don't understand how these fools eat breakfast without drowning in a bowl of cereal/oatmeal.

Polian: NFL switch to 18-game season is 'done deal'

INDIANAPOLIS -- Colts president Bill Polian believes the debate over an 18-game NFL season is over, and an expanded schedule will soon become a reality.

The competition committee member and former league executive twice said he expects the NFL to stretch its regular season by two games. He twice called the decision a "fait accompli" during his weekly radio show Monday night.

"I think that the owners, and principally the commissioner, have decided that it's the way to go, and so the debate, such as it was, is over," Polian said. "I've heard recently, and I'm sorry that this didn't get more coverage earlier, some really, really interesting commentary on it. ... I wish some of that dialogue had taken place earlier."

Officially, nothing has changed.

League owners and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell have expressed support for cutting the preseason schedule from four games to two and expanding the regular-season schedule from 16 to 18. But the format change hasn't been approved by either the owners or the NFL Players Association.

Polian believes that is just a formality although the two sides are trying to work out a new collective bargaining agreement before the current deal expires in March.

A caller asked Polian how close the league was to expanding to 18 games and how the Colts would respond to fewer preseason games, trimming the number of opportunities players would have to win roster spots.

Polian said: "The short answer is that it's a fait accompli, I'm afraid, and we're going to have to find ways to get those evaluative experiences. We're not going to sit back and say, 'Oh oh, 18 games. Now we're going to become a veteran team.' That's not going to work. And it's not the way we want to play."

NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said the league would not respond to Polian's comments.

Polian is already mapping out contingency plans.

One solution under consideration is holding combined practices or controlled scrimmages with nearby teams to give players more chances to impress the evaluators. Those discussions are already being held internally, Polian said.

"In a two-game preseason, you're going to have to play the regulars a half and a half. And that's going to take a full game away, essentially a full game away from the rookies who are trying to make the team," he said. "So how do you deal with that? Well you've got to set up evaluative experiences for them in other venues. And I'm hoping that we can get enough camp time to be able to go against the Bears, let's say, or go against the Bengals in a controlled situation. Perhaps the Rams, people nearby."

Many Colts players, including four-time league MVP Peyton Manning and four-time Pro Bowl center Jeff Saturday have argued that an 18-game season could be detrimental to the undrafted rookies -- like Saturday once was - who are trying to make the team.

Indy has been among the league's best at finding, and cultivating, overlooked talent. In Sunday's victory over Denver, undrafted rookie Jeff Linkenbach made his first NFL start at left tackle, protecting Manning's blind side, and undrafted rookie Blair White caught a TD pass.

The other concern would be injuries and roster sizes.

Many players believe an increase in injuries would shorten more careers. Coaches, such as Jim Caldwell, have said they would likely argue for larger rosters, too.

Right now we have 20 games, 4 fake, 16 real. The NFL (or whomever) is wanting 2 fake, 18 regular.

There was a lot of complaining about how many pre season games being played and how awful it is to lose a starter in a game that doesn't count. The NFL is trying to make half of those games count. And the players don't like it. I get the impression the players would rather 2 fake, 16 real. That won't happen because of the loss of money.

Speaking of money, Lambeau Field is packed on both (or 3) pre season games every year. They make lots of money off of them. What's missing? TV contract cash.

I don't like 18 games, but going to 18 games won't make me stop watching the NFL and I will watch those two extra Packers. I assume many fans feel the same, the NFL knows this and that's why it will happen.

I expect two BYE weeks and longer off season.

Some freak out and say 'OMG then football season is gonna last two weeks longer!' No, I don't think so. Instead of our season starting on Sept 12th, it'll probably have started Aug 29th. Meaning we as fans get games that count half a month sooner.

I prefer a 16 game season, but oh well, if they want to do this it's fine too. I don't get why some are so outraged by this. Staters play half a preseason game anyway, so really it's just one more game in terms of playing time (for those complaining about how this will lead to injuries).

Nothing is a done deal as long as these millionaires and billionaires are piddling along in the new CBA talks.

I am sure it will eventually get down this offseason, but not until it has hampered the preseason and possibly the regular season.

Right now.. the NFLPA and NFL officials/owners all look like spoiled little silver spoon fed bastards.

I was reading somewhere that they would do away with the week in between the championship games and the Super Bowl.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

If they don't, then I would guess with the extra bye week the Super Bowl would take place one week later.

It's a negotiation. Expect a gradual change, say 17 reg games for two years, then 18 reg games. By 2020 I would not be suprised to see no pre season & 20 reg season games. "Pre-season" games then being try-out scrimmages between division opponent's scrubs during training camp.

as a fan who wants more, 18 real sounds good.

but only if the expand rosters.
