Suspensions coming for helmet to helmet?

After Sunday's parade of helmet-to-helmet hits put the issue back on the league's front burner, former Chargers and Patriots safety Rodney Harrison, who now appears on NBC's Football Night in America, sent a message that resonated strongly with the league office.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen explained during Monday Night Countdown that Harrison's explanation regarding fines meaning nothing to him but suspensions meaning everything caught the league's attention. Per Mort, Commissioner Roger Goodell said "we've got to do something about this, we've got to listen to this, we've got to take these guys off the field."

Amen.

Added ESPN's Tom Jackson of Goodell: "I don't that any Commissioner ever in the history of the national football league has cared more about the welfare of players than this man. So he's not gonna let it happen. He's not gonna let it happen."

As we've explained, it starts with ejections, possibly via a suggested procedure that would allow the replay official (or a "safety official") to monitor the game and eject players who use their helmets as weapons.

The key will be to distinguish legal from illegal hits. After Mort's report, ESPN's Keyshawn Johnson spoke about an occasion when he was hit hard while playing, but the video of the contact that flattened Johnson was a clean shoulder hit to the arm area. Notions of Newtonian physics results in Johnson's helmet flying off and his body hitting the ground, but it was a clean hit.

The clean hits should stay; the dirty hits need to go. The NFL now seems to be convinced of that.

Thanks in large part to NBC's Rodney Harrison, who I thought was going to hit me (again) during our video segment last night, which included more discussion regarding this important issue.

It is a tight rope to walk. I never want to see a player hurt. Even with proper technique, you head is alwasy the infront of your shoulder. If you go back and look at Zombo's hit to Cutler. He didn't go at the head or even lead with his head. but his helmet (facemask) slid up the chest and hit Cutler in the head.

That same hit against a non-defensless players would be legal. I am worried this will go to far and everybody will end up sitting. Running backs lead into contact with their head also.

exactly my sentiments, PFWT.

There needs to be a lot of subjectivity to this new policy. Many were discussing today how an offensive player can duck, and what would have been a legal tackle becomes a blow to the head.

On the other hand, stuff like this needs to be stopped.

While suspensions for obvious spears and such are warranted. I think the best way to lessen these types of hits, is to back off the passing game rules. Let defenders defend, let hand play go. Make passing harder, and have teams go back to running and there will be less chance for these hits.

A big reason for these type of hits is, the just throw the ball and hope for PI play calling combined with the we can't defend so we will knock the ball lose.

Ray Anderson from the NFL had a good talk on Mike and Mike this morning. The rules aren't changing, but actually being enforced. And I am glad they are. I've coached peewee through JV football and watching these youngs kids mimic players like James Harrison who lead with their head at all times and don't even attempt to tackle with any form is scary. A player can still be seperated from the ball with a good hard hit, it doesn't have to be to the head or neck. We complain about it every week watching how bad tackling has become in the NFL. I'm hoping that actually enforcing the current rules might start to try and bring back some cultural of playing football with good form.

The thing that annoys me the most in this debate is listening to some of the meathead old players who say that the NFL is turning into figure skating and that real fans of football pay to watch people kill each other. Really? When is the last time you got done watching a game and thought to yourself, "Hmmm...you know what, nobody got knocked out today." I pay to watch good football, and that does not imply that I want to watch young men getting carted off the field because someone is too lazy to tackle like they were taught since peewee.

To be honest with you Tezzy, I love watching when the Ravens and Steelers play, to me that is real football. They go out and play physical, none of this oh he hit my head crap or the quarterback crying for a flag all the time. Our qb is starting to do it alot and it pisses me off. Stop crying for flags to help you out, your getting paid alot of money to play a contact sport, if you don't like it go to basketball.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)
