http://blogs.greenbaypressgazette.com/blogs/gpg/insider/2010/10/22/friday-practice-report-driver-returns/

Receiver Donald Driver (quadriceps) took his first practice reps of the week today during the jog-through portion of practice, a sign that he will indeed play Sunday against Minnesota.

Linebacker Clay Matthews (hamstring) and defensive end Ryan Pickett (ankle) continued to increase their practice involvement and appear on track to return after missing last weeks loss to Miami.

Those who didnt practice were: cornerback Charles Woodson, linebacker Brady Poppinga (knee), guard Marshall Newhouse (back) and defensive end Mike Neal (shoulder). It was unclear whether Woodson was out because of his toe injury or was still dealing with a personal matter that caused him to miss practice yesterday.

The three PUP players Atari Bigby, Al Harris and James Starks continued to get work in practice. A decision will be made most likely tomorrow on whether to activate any of them this week.

Well have the full injury report and comments from coach Mike McCarthy after practice ends around 12:30 p.m.

UPDATE (12:45 p.m.): Heres the official injury report:

Brandon Chillar, LB Shoulder Full Participation Probable

Chad Clifton, T Knee Did Not Participate Probable

Nick Collins, S Knee Full Participation Probable

Donald Driver, WR Quadricep Limited Participation Probable

A.J. Hawk, LB Groin Limited Participation Probable

Cullen Jenkins, DE Hand Full Participation Probable

Clay Matthews, LB Hamstring Full Participation Probable

Mike Neal, DE Shoulder Did Not Participate Out

Marshall Newhouse, G/T Back Did Not Participate Doubtful

Ryan Pickett, DE/NT Ankle Limited Participation Questionable

Brady Poppinga, LB Knee Did Not Participate Out

Mark Tauscher, T Shoulder Limited Participation Questionable

Charles Woodson, CB Toe Did Not Participate Probable

McCarthy: I fully expect Woodson to play. He missed because of a (positive) personnel matter.

on Matthews: Feel good, did more today than yesterday, barring any setback hell be ready to.

Really dont have enough information on Ryan (Pickett).

limit Matthews to sub package: Good question, well talk about those things. That was an option we were shooting for last week

Chillar sounded encouraged: He put together a good week, did some padded work after practice.

Harris, Bigby: I think Al and Atari, what was nice about their week, they looked more comfortable as the week went on. Whether they play or not, that will be determined.

I'm guessing here. But I imagine they'll be limiting his reps. So I'm guessing passing downs where he'll be blitzing (where we need him the most).

What do they mean by limiting Clay to sub packages?

Clay is our starting OLB, so that means he is involved in every 3-4 package we have. For the sake of roughly separating the defenses, we have a base 3-4 (3 DL, 4 LBs), we have a Nickel sub-package (1 extra DB in place of 1 DL or 1 LB) and a Dime sub-package (2 DBs in place of our base 3-4 personnel).

Using defensive sub-packages means that there is a really good chance that the opposing offense will be running a pass-play. Hence, it becomes of greater importance to generate a pass-rush, which Clay excels at.

So, by limiting Clay to sub packages, the Packers will play him a lesser number of snaps than they normally would otherwise. Seeing as teams play their sub packages for most of the games these days, Clay is still likely to play in most of the game as long as he has no injuries. He just will not be used as much to try and stop the run.

Yeah I understand what a subpackage is. I guess what I meant to ask was why would we only use him there?

I guess that's so we don't risk further injury to his hammy?

I imagine so.

Remember how he pulled it last time? He kept cramping up near the end of the game. He plays with a ton of energy and with they way we're getting outgained 20/40 in time of possesion, you just can't keep that up.
