I have a one liter bottle of water. The bottle (Aquafina brand) is approximately 3" in diameter. I froze it. (No, it doesnt break the bottle, because I broke the seal before I froze it.)

1. How long will it take to thaw all the ice in the bottle, assuming it is kept at a room temperature of approximately 70 degrees Fahrenheit?

2. How long will it take if, periodically, I drink any water that has thawed?

3. Which takes longer, 1 or 2?

4. How long does it take to solve this problem?

I don't know, but frozen water is hard enough to use as a weapon against people but not hard enough to break a skull, thus useless against zombies.

By the way, the wholly uncontrolled experiment I did with the bottle in my living room yesterday for #2 was eight hours, thirty-two minutes.

I must say I'm disappointed in all you geeky types. You're supposed to be interested in wasting your time on these sorts of puzzles.

I'm interested, but too stupid to know how to set up the problem. But I thought for sure some of you had done classes that required you to know something about the properties of fluids.

I think you would need to do the problem a little differently.

How long did it take to thaw 16oz of water. Now I have some way to start a algebra equation.

If I knew it took 8 hours to thaw 16oz, I could then find out how long it would take to thaw any amount of water.

Is there a formula for the rate at which water melts?

This much I do kow....

The correct answer for #3 is 1. B/c the ice would melt faster in the container with the melted water beacuse the molecules in liquid water are more tightly packed than the molecules in air, allowing more contact with the ice and a greater rate of heat transfer. Also, water has a higher heat capacity than air.

+1 to dhpackr just for the answer to #3. This is what I was hoping for. :)

but is it the volume of water, or the surface area that determines the rate of melt/

I'll say volume of water in the bottle. The ice is really going to melt at two different rates in the bottle containing ice, water and air. The molecues are going to act differently in water (where the molecues are greater in number) than air (which has less molecues moving than water).

So the amount of ice in the bottle that is under water is going to make that ice melt faster than the ice above water.

now if it were a block of ice sitting in a bucket outside, then one could argue the amount of wind would have to be added to the equation.

But just a bottle filled with ice, air is not a factor IMO.
