No way Clifton gets cut unless he completely falls apart in camp. I'll be the first to admit, I too thought he was done after '09, and his resurgence last season was one of the more unheralded surprises of the season. You can never have too many quality veterans for the youngsters like Sherrod and Bulaga to keep learning from. The Packers will keep riding that horse until the wheels completely fall off.

Tauscher is as good as done. At best, he'd have to take a sharp pay cut to say in Green Bay, and even then I don't see the Packers wasting a roster spot on an declining veteran who can't stay healthy. He'd probably have a better chance of latching on with another team elsewhere. Bulaga needs to stay at RT and keep developing. Sherrod should play the role Bulaga did his rookie season. The primary backup to both Tackle positions. He won't be thrusted into starting right away and can ease into learning the system.

LG can be an open competition between Lang, McDonald, and the new rookie. Dietrich-Smith is a servicable backup center who can also be an emergency LS if necessary. Spitz and Colledge are decent players, but Spitz can't stay healthy and Colledge is a headcase who is inconsistent starter. Any money that would in theory be used to re-sign them would be better spent on a mid-season extension for Sitton.

Bulaga as a backup? Are you serious? Like Tezzy says, Bulaga will start, as he did for most of last season. I don't think there's any question about that. And Tauscher is as good as gone. They are not going to pay $4.1 million for him to stay. I think Spitz will be gone too. He was kind of useless last year.

The big question among the starters is who will replace Colledge if he leaves. It could be either Lang or Sherrod, and they could do some shuffling among RT and LG, which may involve Bulaga switching spots.

So here are the top six players if Colledge leaves:

Clifton
Sitton
Wells
Bulaga
Sherrod
Lang

To fill out the game-day roster, my guess would be Marshall Newhouse and either Nick McDonald or Even Dietrich-Smith--whichever one wins the training camp battle for the backup center spot. I would go with McDonald.

That leaves us with two more players needed to fill out the roster. My guess would be the guard they drafted (Schlauderhaff) plus somebody we haven't heard of yet, or maybe the loser of the battle for backup center.

I would not be surprised if we resign Spitz, if he is finally healthy. He can back up all three interior o-line spots and should be cheap. We cut EDS last year and kept McDonald so I think Evan would have to be a stud in TC to earn a spot on this team.

As far as LG goes, I'm not opposed to seeing McDonald, Lang, & Schlauderhaff battle out for that LG spot. I think a serviceable LG could emerge from that group who will play for a lot less money than Daryn Colledge will require. I'd rather use that money to lock up Josh Sitton long term.

Fuck Colledge.

I want him off this team, and am willing to take the chance on the next guy that is (apparently guesstimated) to be able to play the position. My God, we have FINALLY pumped some priority into this line (my ONLY bitch with Ted, historically)

FUCK HIM (Colledge) He NEVER could run block, right next door to a friggin' Left tackle that has a long history of semi - sucking also, and frankly-- our CENTER ain't "all that" either..

We are getting bigger and stronger, let's just hope some of these big bastards can actually learn how to play as the unit we all aspire to. It's time to take the chance at LG. If it don't work out, then our 0-line coach should finally be shot, imo.

...And if Lang is nohelp, Pack93z should also sustain a round, though since I have a soft spot, it's OK with me if you shoot him in his peg leg.

It's an opinion.

I totally agree with the sentiment that College, on his best day, is at most slightly above average.

But, for discussions sake, are we perhaps undervaluing Colledge's leadership? He has been a mainstay at LG (meaning he has not missed games to injury) and he is almost always available at practices too. Plus, back a couple of years ago when the offense had a closed door meeting to sort out their issues after a slow start, it was Colledge who spoke up first against everyone piling up on the O-line instead of looking at their own short comings (Rodgers holding the ball too long, guys dropping balls, etc. if I recall correctly). Seeing as Cliffy is on his last legs, Taush may potentially not even be back, and that Wells is closer to the end of his career than the beginning, does Colledge have any leadership intangibles that may lead us to bring him back on a reasonable contract?

I think Tausher and Spitz could be done. Tausher didn't have his normal stuff last year when healthy and then has to come back from an injury as well. Spitz was coming from a back injury and didn't look like a shell of him old self. I think the depth chart is something like this... (before signing anyone)

Also I think the prefer norm is 7 OL on the active roster not 8. Someone who can play both OT position and someone who can play center... and one of them also backs up OG.

LT: Clifton, Sherrod
LG: Lang, Schlauderaff
C: Wells, McDonald, D-Smith, Genus
RG: Sitton, Battles, Dominguez
RT: Tausher, Campbell, Newhouse

If they don't sign anyone else I expect McDonald and maybe Sherrod to be the one to battle Lang at LG. But the question how much trust do they have in Lang? ... MM expressed disappointment in Lang not stepping it up this year after not being able to work out in the offseason due to surgery and not healing fast.

Genus and Dominguez are UDFA players this year and could rise on this board. And yes I did mean to put Campbell ahead of Newhouse.

I could be totally wrong about Newhouse but I have yet to see the upside... in last year training camp he wasn't quick/fast enough for to stop a good speed rush from a 3rd string guy and he's technique with his elbows/punch was horrible and didn't let keep a DT from powering into his chest... and rumor has it the Packers are looking at Newhouse as OT only... which from that I assume he hasn't fixed the technique because if he had I think he'd have more potential at OG.

Also at the end of the year normally all the Practice Squad guys get a development contract which Thompson doesn't like one year deals so he give them two year deals. Campbell surprising got a 3 year deal which might not mean anything... then again it could. I'm not sure but I think Campbell did get cut from the Packers practice squad at one point but then was brought back and got a 3 year deal? ... if correct to me it sounds like something is up. Maybe getting cut set him straight and he did very well from there on out?

In training camp last year Campbell was very heavy but didn't look at all like a normal heavy guy. He had surprising quick moving feet and could move very well for a guy with that much weight. He's problem is he was too high making it easy to bull rush and he wasn't physical getting knocked on his butt way too often. But if he learned to get and stay low and be more physical the kid has potential with those super quick feet for a very large guy.

Co;;edge and Spitz are gone and the compensatory picks for them do not come until next year.

I always look for the roster to have
4 OT's (Clifton, Bulaga, Sherrod, Lang)
3 OG's (Sitton + 2)
2 Centers (Wells + 1)

Game Day actives are the 5 starters, and A)a right side backup, a left side back up, and back up Center or 😎 an inside guy and 2 outside, or C) an either side OT, OG, C, depending on personnel.

Clifton
Sherrod
Wells
Sitton
Bulaga

If Clifton gets injured Lang comes in at guard. Bulaga and Sherrod are tackles

That's 6 mentioned so far plus no clear #2 Center which would be the 7 of the 8 game day actives.

Suddenly I have a feeling that the undrafted free agent rookie Center might be the undrafted guy that makes it this year.

I doubt will see Sherrod starting specially with the lockout issue, I don't see it happening unless an injury or by mid season.

Packers can and have gone with only 7 guys on game day.. and have used the 8th spot at another position.

From what I read sounded like the starting line-up at practices are
Clifton, Sherrod, Wells, Sitton and Bulaga

If healthy all you need for back-up for that is Lang and a Center (McDonald)

Lang can play both OT and OG. And Sherrod can move to LT.
Last year D-Smith got cut and McD didn't so I'm guessing it will be McD.
ba ba ba I'm lovin it
