Green calls it a career

GREEN BAY – Ahman Green is ready to say goodbye to football, or at least playing it.

The Green Bay Packers’ all-time leading rusher with 8,322 yards, Green announced on Green and Gold Today on ESPNMilwaukee.com and ESPNMadison.com Friday that he is retiring after 12 NFL seasons, eight of which he spent with the Packers.

Green, who is living in the Green Bay area and volunteer coaching football at De Pere High School, spent time with the Omaha NightHawks of the UFL and the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL after playing nine games with the Packers in 2009.

He said he hopes to sign a ceremonial one-day contract with the Packers but has yet to reach out to coach Mike McCarthy or general manager Ted Thompson. Technically speaking, Green’s last NFL contract was with the Packers, when he joined the team in ‘09.

Green left the Packers as a free agent following the 2006 season for a four-year, $23 million deal with the Houston Texans. Beset by injuries, Green ended up carrying the ball only 144 times for the Texans in two years before he was released.

Some fans criticized Thompson for letting Green go, but Green said it was his mistake, not the Packers’.

“Trust me, I was angry at myself for making that decision, to go down to Houston,” Green said. “But that’s the past. When I had the opportunity to come back, I jumped at it.”

He was just 47 yards shy of the franchise record when he left Green Bay, and when injuries struck the Packers’ backfield in 2009, the team re-signed him to serve as a backup to starter Ryan Grant. Green ended up carrying the ball 41 times for 160 yards in eight regular-season games, breaking Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Taylor’s team rushing record in a loss at Tampa Bay.

“I knew it was going to be a limited role,” Green said of his return. “To break Jim Taylor’s record, that did a lot for me. It took a monkey off my back. That was on my mind when I went down to Houston. I never knew how close I was to breaking certain records. But when I was told how many yards I had left, I slapped myself, because I knew that could’ve been in one carry. When I left in ’07, I was 48 yards away (from setting the record). To be given that chance to come back and do that, I take my hat off to all the guys who help me do that.”

Green was named to four straight Pro Bowls and set the franchise’s single-season rushing record with 1,883 yards and scored 20 touchdowns in 2003, his fourth season in Green Bay after former Packers coach Mike Holmgren jettisoned him from Seattle for fumbling too much. On Friday, Green said he knew once he learned the Packers’ version of the West Coast offense, he would flourish.

“In Seattle, the problem with me, I was young and I was learning a new playbook,” Green said. “I went from learning and unlearning the option offense at Nebraska, to learning and then unlearning the Dennis Erickson offense, and then the West Coast. With three offenses in two years, I knew it wasn’t going to be an easy task. And that’s what took my focus off the way I played, when I fumbled, or when I missed holes or I didn’t pick up the blitz. I told myself, ‘Once I learn this offense, I’m going to be good at it.’

“I think once the trade happened, that was a blessing. All I wanted was an opportunity to be a football player, and to be a good one. I just needed to be given that chance, and that’s what I got in Green Bay.”

Loved this dude in the mid-00s. My favorite Packer running back of all time.

I wear his jersey several times every season (its my lazy\lounging around jersey). I wish he was on the team last year as a reserve to get the ring.

Just an awesome football player. Definitely worth Fred Vinson!

I still remember that beastly '03 season he had where he racked up over 1800 yards rushing. That was definitely one of the best offensive line groups this team ever had. It's too bad Sherman couldn't build anything more than an average at best defense to save his life during his tenure.

Ahman will be a welcome addition to the Packers Hall of Fame when the time comes.

A very good player for the Packers, but honestly also benefited from one of the best running lines in the modern day history of the Packers.

I think there were more talented backs on the Packers over the years, but IMO Ahman was one of the few to maximize his talent here in GB.

I echo Wayne's remarks.. thank you for your play while donning the Green and Gold.

dfosterf (5-Aug) : I'm going to call that a good move.
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Packers sign CB Corey Ballentine
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : I'm not sure how to kill the draft order just yet so it's not so confusing.
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : *to be able
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : and because it's not a dynasty league (which makes a lot more sense to be ability to trade picks)
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Oh I know; I was just exploring and it blew my mind that you could trade picks because of the whole reordering thing
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Zero, I think I preferred my offer: your 1st for my 15th rounder
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Keep in mind, we do a draft reorder once all members locked in
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : You can have my 12th Rd for your 2nd round
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Hey i didn't know we could trade picks in fantasy

Martha Careful (2-Aug) : Congratulations Sterling Sharpe. He was terrific and I loved watching him play.
beast (2-Aug) : I believe it's technically against the CBA rules, but Jerry just calls it a simple unofficial chat... and somehow gets away with it.
beast (2-Aug) : Jerry Jones is infamous for ̶n̶e̶g̶o̶t̶i̶a̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ chatting with players one on one... and going around the agent.
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Oo just saw a blurb saying that Dallas negotiated directly with Parsons and not through his agent
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : I assumed that both guys will get paid, just a matter of when or how we get there
Zero2Cool (1-Aug) : McLaurin nor Micah going anywhere. They will get money
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : the Synder years or do they take care of one of their own?
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Do the Commanders risk losing a top WR with an emerging QB just because he's turning 30 and potentially risk damaging the rebuild from
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Turns 30 this September, plays at a high level and Washington has some cap space I believe
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : More interesting is Washington with Terry McLaurin
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : I would imagine Dallas will resolve this issue with a truckload of money
Zero2Cool (1-Aug) : Micah pulling a Myles with trade request

Mucky Tundra (31-Jul) : After starting off camp with 25 straight made field goals, Brandon McManus has missed one
Zero2Cool (31-Jul) : But it should be stable
Zero2Cool (31-Jul) : It's probably gonna be slower.
Zero2Cool (31-Jul) : We're gonna just full go on to the new host.
Zero2Cool (31-Jul) : What crap. Site issues galore
Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : if PH dies, there is packerpeople com available
Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : database is on new host, eventually website will follow
Mucky Tundra (30-Jul) : Zero, regarding Ewers, you are correct.
Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : Sadly, this might be our life for awhile. I could put it on another host, but seems it was slower, although more stable
beast (30-Jul) : How long will it be down?
beast (30-Jul) : RIP site 😭
Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : Site will die, I have to restart it.
Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : Quinn stinks. Lot of underthrows. (my guess)
beast (30-Jul) : How did Quinn Ewers effect where Golden was drafted?
dfosterf (30-Jul) : All I've experienced was late at night or early morning. I just figured you were doing something in the background
