I won't bash the man. He truly was great, but saying he's taking over for God is idiotic

Mother Mary... You do not know my humor after this long, me being here since the real launch of this web site when the other site was sold?

I could have typed "AL is now filing a law suit with God to move Heaven to Los Angeles"...

But that would have gone over your head as well.

Really sad day for football. We've lost one of the greatest figureheads of our sport. As others have said he should not be judged for his later years. In his prime he oversaw some of the all time great teams. I'm glad to see the Raiders responded the way they did and honored his legacy with a great game and win. May he rest in peace.

Do you have any Al Davis stories? On Mike and Mike they were going to tell their favorite, but I had to leave the car and come into work and missed it. I'm hoping you have some good stories about him to share. I just read that he was actually against the merger because he felt the AFL was more of a TV brand. I did not know that.

We tend to learn more about a persons life, after they've passed.

Apparently, the Raiders will stay in the family, with Al's wife Carol and son Marc retaining controlling interest. Marc will not be involved in personnel decisions, however, as he is too tenderhearted. He told his father he could never understand how he was able to let people go.

Al and Carol had been married since 1954. By all accounts he was totally devoted to her. When she had a severe heart attack 25 years ago, he moved into her hospital room to be at her side for the better part of a month. It is said that whenever he knew a family member or friend was ill, Al Davis would do whatever it took to ensure that person got the best healthcare possible.

Al looked after more former players then any owner in the history of the game. Not only his own players, but players of other teams. Did you know he once called Terry Bradshaw, when he thought Terry might be having a tough time. Bradshaw said the phone rang and it was Al Davis... Al asked him how he was doing financially, and if he could help him out in any way?

Thanks, RaiderPride. I appreciate the kind words. I should note that I misspelled Mark Davis' name above. I am not sure why I thought his first name was spelled Marc.

I also neglected to mention that Al Davis was the most progressive owner in all of football. He was way ahead of his time. As early as the mid-1960s, his teams were more racially integrated -- top to bottom -- than many football teams even decades later. He was color blind in every way. If I am not mistaken, he was the first man to hire a black coach and a Hispanic coach, he was the first to recruit a black quarterback, and he installed the NFL's only female CEO. He loathed racism and declared early on that he would have zero tolerance for it. In the early 1960s, a fight broke out (I believe at a bar) along racial lines that involved members of his team. The next day, Davis asked the coach what had happened. Upon learning the details, he broke into a fury and stormed into the team meeting, screaming that there was no room for racism on his team, and if anyone on the roster had any sort of negative feelings toward another race, he would be off the team and he (Al) would see to it that he never played another down in the NFL again. Race was apparently never an issue in the Raiders locker room again.

Well done Al Davis.

Pretentious yuppies love to mock sports and get all holier than thou when it comes to racism. My father said it best, sports was probably one of the main reasons in this country for racism to decline. Kudos to Al Davis to leading the charge in that fight. (And of course Gale Sayers, Brian Piccolo, and hundreds of other names that I left out.)

Interestingly, on the climactic play of the Raiders/Texans game, in which Matt Schaub was intercepted in the end zone to seal the deal for the Raiders, there were only 10 men on the field for the Raiders.

They ran an unintentional missing-man formation for their fallen leader.

It was intentional so Al Davis could be on the field for the final miracle play.
