Goode tabbed as long snapper

Green Bay - The Green Bay Packers didn't get their new long snapper off the street. It was a driveway.

We were forming up a driveway, getting ready to pour concrete and my agent called and said they were wanting to bring me in for a workout, Brett Goode said Sunday night. It wasnt too hard of a decision to quit doing that. Just headed on the way.

Goode, 23, was signed by the Packers on Sunday afternoon after winning a three-way tryout against Tim Bugg and Ryan Senser. The Packers, who needed Goode after J.J. Jansen was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury suffered Thursday night against the Tennessee Titans, also showed some interest in Tim Lindsey, released by the Seattle Seahawks on Friday.

It isnt known who on the 53-man roster will be released to make room for Goode. Linebacker Tracy White, who knows hes on the bubble, said he hadnt heard anything late Sunday night. Safety Charlie Peprah, offensive tackle Breno Giacomini and cornerback Jarrett Bush are among those who could be let go.

Goode was a four-year letterman at Arkansas, where he snapped on punts for four years and placements his final three. Goode was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2007 and lasted until Aug. 21. He was signed by the Jaguars again in the spring but was released June 19.

The first year, it was just experience, Goode said. They didnt want to have a rookie punter and a rookie snapper. This year, it was just the 80-man roster. That kind of killed having extra specialists in camp.

Since returning to his home in Fort Smith, Ark., Goode worked construction and had just signed up to take some classes at the local community college when the Packers called.

Goode, who stands 6 feet 1 inch, weighed just 232 pounds at Arkansas but said he weighed in at 260 in Green Bay.

I was told very quick that I was too small and I didnt like that, Goode said. I got in and tried to gain some weight. Finally got it up. It was easier to block. That was the big noticeable difference. I wasnt getting pushed around, especially on long field goals.

Goode has been working out and snapping two to three times per week to stay sharp. He is confident he can meld quickly with punter Jon Ryan and kicker Mason Crosby, who had spent four months teaming up with Jansen.

I know its going to be a little learning curve picking up everything and just getting together with the guys and trying to build some cohesiveness really quick, Goode said. But I dont think thats going to be a big problem. Im ready to get going.

No claims: For the first time in his four-year tenure as the Packers general manager, Ted Thompson did not put in a waiver claim on any player released by another team.

I think our core group has progressed far enough along that, barring some injuries or something, we felt pretty good about being able to pick and choose from our group, Thompson said Sunday. It wasnt that there werent some people that wed be interested in, its just that, you have to cut somebody else, and we werent really that eager to do that.

Last season, Thompson claimed fullback John Kuhn and traded for running back Ryan Grant.

But this year, the Packers stood by while the rest of the league picked through the pile of discarded players.

That means if any experience at quarterback or girth at defensive tackle is going to be added, it will come from street free agents. But neither of those scenarios looks likely, either.

Thompson said he and coach Mike McCarthy are confident in quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers, Brian Brohm and Matt Flynn, who dont have a career start among them.

I think Mike and I both are, Thompson said. We wish we had a little more seasoning, but we dont.

Veterans Chris Simms (28 years old, 15 career starts), Joey Harrington (29, 76) and Bruce Gradkowski (25, 11) are among the quarterbacks available.

Wynn back: Running back DeShawn Wynn, who was released Monday after his second straight injury-plagued training camp, was one of eight players signed to the teams practice squad.

I know DeShawn gets a lot of guff, and were all a little bit disappointed hes been injured some, but he helped us win some games last year, and I think hes a talented back, Thompson said.

Others signed were: wide receivers Jake Allen and Brett Swain, center Brennen Carvalho, tight end Joey Haynos, linebacker Danny Lansanah, tackle Alfred Malone and cornerback Joe Porter.

Short yardage: Defensive tackle Daniel Muir, who was eligible to be put on the practice squad if he cleared waivers, was claimed by the Indianapolis Colts. . . .

Thompson said he was aware of the critical comments made recently by former quarterback Brett Favre, but declined to comment on them directly. Ill say this and weve said this before: We wish Brett the best and we are trying to get ready for the start of the season, Thompson said. . . .

Defensive tackle Rodney Allen, who was placed on injured reserve after breaking a bone in his right hand Tuesday, is expected to reach an injury settlement and be released.

Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Oo just saw a blurb saying that Dallas negotiated directly with Parsons and not through his agent
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : I assumed that both guys will get paid, just a matter of when or how we get there
Zero2Cool (1-Aug) : McLaurin nor Micah going anywhere. They will get money
