The Green Bay Packers have signed punter Derrick
Frost and long snapper Brett Goode and released punter Jon Ryan and linebacker Abdul Hodge.Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, announced the transactions Monday.

Derrick Frost, a fifth-year pro from Northern Iowa, spent the past three seasons with the Washington Redskins (2005-07) after beginning his NFL career with the Cleveland Browns (2004).

Brett Goode originally signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a non-drafted free agent in April 2007 and participated in training camp before being released. He re-signed with the Jaguars in March 2008 before his release in June.

Jon Ryan rules... Why did we need a new punter?

From The Sports Network:
"Punter Derrick Frost and NFL preseason rushing leader Marcus Mason were among the highest-profile players released by the Washington Redskins on Saturday, as Jim Zorn's club reduced its roster to the 53-man maximum.

Frost appeared in 49 games as a member of the Redskins over the past three seasons, but lost his job in the preseason to Durant Books, a sixth-round Draft choice out of Georgia Tech. Frost's preseason punting avg. (45.5) was nearly three yards better than that of Brooks (42.8), but the rookie's net punting average was higher."

WOW!!!!

Ryan is a shocker, can't understand why he'd be let go this late. They must really like Frost.

Hodge... hope you find a new home. Has talent, hopefully he is fully healthy and can get an opportunity to shine.

Um, is this April Fools Day? No? Well then, this is a surprise. Jon Ryan was lights-out in the preseason. Ryan was also an excellent holder on field goal attempts. Imagine what Mason Crosby must be thinking right now, having lost his long snapper and now his holder.

Hodge I can kind of understand a little bit, maybe, but dang, that's a surprise too.

Frost bad-mouthed Redskins management on his way out the door. Here's an excerpt from an article in the Washington Post:

Redskins' Frost Doesn't Go Quietly
Punter Criticizes Team After He's Cut

By Jason Reid and Jason La Canfora
Washington Post Staff Writers
Sunday, August 31, 2008; Page D01

Despite shaky preseason play by some of their draft picks, the Washington Redskins kept all 10 of them when they made final cuts yesterday, prompting one of the released veterans to say he was cut so the front office could "look as good as possible."

Punter Derrick Frost, who struggled at times last season but kicked well in the preseason, implied the decision to keep rookie Durant Brooks was made to bolster Vinny Cerrato, Washington's first-year executive vice president of football operations.

"I feel like I was dealt with dishonestly," Frost said. "I want to thank [special teams coach] Danny Smith for the three years he gave me here, and I feel like he always treated me well, and I will continue to think that. But I think we all know who made the decision, and when you've got a draft that isn't starting to look so good, you're going to do whatever you can to make it look as good as possible."

This makes absolutely no sense.

And apparently, the Packers didn't even give Frost a try out. WTF?

http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/ic/blogs/insider/index.shtml

According to the Post, Frost was scheduled to try out for the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday, but the Packers signed him today without a tryout. Frost, who began his career with the Cleveland Browns in 2003, punted for the Redskins the past three seasons. Last year, Frost averaged 41.0 yards and netted 36.4 -- compared to a 44.4 gross average and 37.6 net for Ryan.
