This is goes to my own personal ignorance here, but I thought when an emergency exit door was opened, it signaled an alarm to the location and police?

Edit, This might shock some who think this sort of thing is fairly 'new'.
"The number of mass murders in the U.S. has remained fairly steady, averaging about two dozen cases a year since the mid-1970s"

Various thoughts:

6. And grad students do have a higher-than-average incidence of mental illness. It used to amaze me how many of my fellow grad students/professors were under treatment for mental health issues ... until I became one of them. That doesn't make us all whack-jobs, but it does mean that I'm not surprised that this gunman turns out to have been a grad student.

Afterall, we live in a seriously fucked up world.

It's amazing to me, that it isn't more widely accepted that most people deal with depression without medication - and that we acually still categorize people as "normal" or "whacked out". I think most people walking around that are considered normal - truly could use some psychological help. I know Mrs. D and I should seek some therapy for the colossal mind fuck we just dealt with as parents, but I doubt we'll go. We didn't have time to deal with our grief with Mia, we just had to get her well.

The gunman was there, too. He bought a ticket at the door and took a seat near the emergency exit door, according to police.

Aurora works to emerge from chaos, carnage

'Oh my God'

The movie was in its first minutes and most of the moviegoers didn't appear to notice the exit door open and then only partially close.

We have become desensitized to alot of the violence, because of the video games, movies, and TV shows that make it appear as "normal" activity.
No, i'm not blaming Hollywood for this sicko's actions. I'm just saying it doesn't help when "murder and mayhem" are idolized in so many ways.
The graphic destruction we see every day on TV alone is more then they would have shown in a movie rated "M" (that's how they used to rate for "Mature audiences only")
Now ANY kid can see the violent acts, and i don't care what anyone says, it DOES affect people. Especially young minds.
Look at movies made in the 1950's and compare them to what we have today. They killed people in movies back then, too....but you didn't see their brains and guts actually splattered on the floors and walls. Alot was left to your imagination.
Those of you old enough might remember a Wisconsin man named "Ed Gein". He was a grave robber who did all kinds of sick stuff with the bodies. I believe he "only" actually murdered one woman. Yet the state was in shock over this. Today, it would probably be a blip in the back pages of the newspaper.
The acts of this nutjob won't stop me from going to see the Batman movie.......if i can come up with the $9.50 it takes to get in, that is!

anywho, i've always been terrified of touching emergency exit doors because i didn't want to be the asshole who sets off the alarm. Apparently the "WARNING: ALARM WILL SOUND" message plastered all over them is just for show.

A couple of quick thoughts here...

1) This kid seemed pretty well fitted with equipment for a unemployed college drop out college student.. full riot gear, including leg, groin and throat protectors.. Per CBS News.

This sounds like a guy preparing for a firefight.. yet he calmly surrendered to police? Setting trip wires and other protective measures at his apartment... yet informing police that they are there?

If these reports are correct.. it just doesn't add up in my opinion. Either this kid was a complete and unstable whack job... he has severe mental illness or ....

2) If he wasn't let in a side door.. or exited the emergency door and reentered.. how the hell did he get a AR-15 and a shot gun into the theater.. let alone a pistol. Even our little local theater has a buzzer attached to the emergency doors.. with one employee walking the hallways.. mostly watching for kids trying to sneak into the theater to catch a free show.

3) If this is to be believed.. the government warned about such attacks. Bring on the next round of conspiracy theories over the next coming days.

4) I don't buy into the movie / games are assisting in this type of behavior. Sure they might get the idea of how to dress or maybe even assisting in picking their targets.. but I think it is clear these types are just waiting to snap.

I think it is convenient to assign blame to movies, games or even other world events. Instead I think it is people that are troubled and lose it..

What next.. blaming the guns, the movie theater, the school even for teaching him how to mix chemical that were reportedly found at his residence. Or it must have been the pot that neighbors claim that he smoked often behind the apartment complex.

Personally.. some people fold under the pressures of life and blow.

Per reports.. this kid spent hours playing games.. however it was guitar hero.

5) I pray for the families and friends of those lost or injured in this tragic event.. and personally if this guy isn't suffering from some proven mental disease.. someone Dahmer's his ass in prison. Save us the time, money and horror of trying this guy on the stand.
