1: Vanilla offense

Why are we playing vanilla offense? Are we still in preseason? I think we have about 5 different plays and 3 formations to use, its really predictable. Is this because MM has "lost it" because the players are not smart enough?

2: No goal line defense

I know, I know we can't stop the run at all but everytime our opponents had a 1 or 2 yard play they made it very very easy. The bears won last night because they could stop the eagles twice from the 1 yard line its an important part of the game and we are a gruyere cheese.

3: Tight ends disappeared from the game

This has to be on Rodgers? Favre and Lee were in good sync last season for several big plays now Lee has totally disappeared from our offense. Why? Playcalling? Lee? Rodgers?

I have a list of another 67 problems but well I thought it can be good to know what you guys think about these 3.

#1 I totally agree with, it was 3rd and 17 or w/e yesterday and we came out in that Max protect formation INSTEAD of the Big 5(or 4 but you get my point). I don't even remember seeing a quick slant to Greg or DD yesterday, a play that we have turned into a big play many times.

1. The offensive playcalling has been vanilla for a lot of reasons. Our o-line is so crappy, none of the deep routes can develop. WE don't have 5 healthy receivers right now (IMO we should be prepping Finley to be a part of the big 5 in case one our recievers is hurt) We haven't been using screens or reverses with any degree of success since MM took over which is making it tough to keep defenses honest.

2. We need another big body. Cole and Jenkins are too small to be inside on short yardage situations. I really think we can stop anyone because we are lacking another real huge gap clogger to go along with Pickett.

3. Donald Lee dropped two passes this week and at least one in every game this year. And you guys wonder why Rodgers stopped throwing towards him?

:magnifyglass: MM has not been able to get an "O" line together in order to expand the play book. Our "D" line is definitely undersize and slow. Think Ted Thompson bet way too much on Harrell and we're paying big time now. Injuries have taken a major toll as well. Why all of this is so falls on Ted Thompson and MM's heads and perhaps the assistant coaches.

McCarthy can only call plays that put players in position to make plays.

When those players aren't making plays, you can't blame McCarthy.

How can someone go from great play caller to a terrible one in the course of an off-season?

Also, let's not forget that McCarthy's O system often calls for a run/pass option that is decided by the QB based on what he sees. Hard to blame McCarthy for bad playcalling when he lets his QB call the plays often.

Interesting thing to consider, then maybe Aaron is playing chicken in most first downs ? What is the difference between avoiding mistakes and being a chicken ?

If the system is dependent on the QB reading and calling the play, then doesn't that mean the reason for last year's success can largely be credited to Favre's experience in reading defenses and making the right call? This isn't knocking Rodgers' skills, but he doesn't have the experience Favre does. I've seen too many people try to credit Favre's success last year with McCarthy's system to now have the argument being made that McCarthy's system relies on the QB. The best answer seems to be that McCarthy's system and Favre were a perfect fit.

1. I think the OL is so bad, AR doesn't have time to look deep. He's already on the move after 2 seconds. But MM is pretty predictable now. I don't know what happened. This is not the same MM that was coaching us last year. He's very conservative, very predictable, and takes no chances. He plays more not to lose than to win.

2. Anyone else missing Corey Williams and wonder when Justin Heading to Bust Status Harrell is going to play?

3. Donald Lee is often back helping the OL. When he does get a pass thrown his way, it's like a surprise. That may be why he's dropping passes. He didn't drop passes last year.

Hard to make an offense go when your o-line is in shambles. Deep routes are out of the question. TEs and/or RBs have to be kept in to block (and none of them are very good at it). Toss in a boatload of injuries and you don't have much creative license with the playbook.

That said, I despise the "prevent offense" we hide behind whenever we have a lead. If we had a running game, it might work. But all we've done this year is go 3-and-out and give the ball right back to the bad guys.

Yes, one thing I was saying to my Niner friend is that the reason we're having these D injuries is because they're on the field all day long.

The O needs to eat some clock. We need first downs. That's what's killing us.

Also, you can't blame the OL for everything. Lynn Dickey had the worst OL in the NFL and we still we #1 in O in '83.

When an aspect of your game is bad, you do something else to cover it up. A fact of life - every team has strengths and weaknesses. You implement your strengths and do the best to not let your enemy exploit your weaknesses. On the flip side, you exploit your enemy's weaknesses while trying to minimize their strengths.

No excuses. It's time for MM to step up and win us some damn games. He has let us down this year. We all know he has potential. We've seen him last year. We know what he's capable of.
