Packers' pass rush somewhat hamstrung without Clay Matthews

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Clay Matthews' impact on the Green Bay Packers' pass rush is perhaps most noticeable when he’s unavailable, which could be the case again this Sunday at Tennessee.

Matthews was nowhere to be found on the practice field Thursday, only hours after coach Mike McCarthy sounded optimistic that his Pro Bowl outside linebacker might be able to do some work after missing the last two games because of a hamstring injury.

“Clay, hopefully he'll do more today, and today will tell us a lot based on how much he goes,” McCarthy said before practice. “I mean he's scheduled to be in the early group, the [pre-practice rehab] group, so we'll see what comes out of that.”

In all, Matthews has missed three games because of the same injury. He sat out the Week 3 game against Detroit but played in the next three only to experience more problems at the end of the stretch.

This season, no, I don't think that is the sole reason for the lack of production of him individually.

Lack of a another body in the rotation probably more so. Peppers is being taxed more snaps.. Perry is becoming invisible a bit again.

And why isn't the staff using a cat like Jayrone Elliott is more packages, maybe a liability in coverage, but provides a pass rush.

To me... Clay is either in line for a haircut on salary or a trade piece in the offseason. If someone is willing to take on the salary vs his limited availability.
