The Packers, Browns, Buccaneers, and Cowboys are among the clubs searching for free agent safety help, as Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com writes in a wide analysis of what has been a stagnant safety market.

Safeties who still remain unsigned including starting options such as Eric Reid, Tre Boston, Kenny Vaccaro, Tyvon Branch, and Ron Parker. Mitigating factors could be at play but it’s still extremely surprising that high-quality players are still available at an important position. Free agent defensive backs have in fact been communicating with one another in an attempt to elucidate the overall lack of interest, per La Canfora.

“We’re barely even getting phone calls, and we’re not the only ones,” an agents tells La Canfora. “You can’t even get (BS) offers. We’re literally getting nothing. I’m not even talking one year, $3 million. Nothing. And it’s not just us.”

It's be interesting to hear an insiders take on why this is... I'm guessing that it might be for the same reasons that the free agent RB market got stagnant a few years ago... which was because
  • Too many of them, over supply hurt the demand
  • The FAs weren't the best
  • and
  • Because there were a number in the draft that looked A LOT BETTER (at least based on price point)

So I'm wondering, if this means, teams are really liking this years Safety draft class, and if that's hurting the value of the Safety FAs.

Some have also speculated that the potential trade of FS Earl Thomas might be holding things up for the FA Safety market... but it's hard for me to image that all of those teams are waiting for that... as usually there is a clear 2 favorites... especially with John Schneider... who reportedly traded a player to the Eagles (because they were the first to match his demand) despite the Patriots later offering more (but it was after he already said yes to the Eagles). So the other teams would be in play already.

But it's been strange, for the Safety free agent, it really hasn't gotten going yet (which might be good for the teams looking for a Safety, as there might be cheaper deals to be had).

If they arent getting any offers at all then we must not be interested at all even at bargain base me prices. In house promotion

Based on rumors, the Packers have been looking at Safeties, both in FA and the draft.

Looking at Petine past teams drafts, they've
• always drafted a QB with a 1st round pick in his first year (which if you count Randall as a first round pick, sorta happened this year)
  • Usually have drafted a good coverage LB in the 2nd or 3rd round
  • almost never drafted a Safety high (partly because they already had a good FS)
• Which still makes me wonder, how will Josh Jones be used... more like a run support SS or as a coverage LB? Or will he be doing a lot of both?

Safety market must be poor. Browns traded for CB Damarious Randall and switched him (back to) Safety.

The Strong safety + inside linebacker positions seem to be still going through some sort of evolution. With the pass happy league if you can't cover RB/TE consistently you're just not worth as much money as say 5-10 years ago. I think the strong safeties in free agency are finding that out right about now, no one wants to pay you 5-10 million if they can only play you on 1st down without worrying you're a liability.
