I hope Ted Thompson knows what he's doing. Maybe our players do fit well like he says. I sure hope so.

Welp, according to Capers the D will be designed to fit the strengths of the players. I wouldn't worry about it so much. It's going to be a mix of schemes, and even the 3-4 D may be modified and have different looks.

This is what I do not get...

Why do people think Ted doesn't listen to the coaches?

We know from last year that he listened to someone and cut our punter.

Capers knows EXACTLY what type of player is needed to make HIS system work.

But it all because Ted has an ego and is doing it his own way?

I'm sure we're going to gradually implement the 3-4, much like the Cowboys did when they switched over. We can't go strictly 3-4 just yet.

I also cannot see us being as bad as we were last year in terms of defensive rankings. We hopefully have no where to go but up.

I see both sides, although I agree with dhazer. I would like for us to grab a starter in FA again. We are not that solid of a team that we can just fill backup positions.

We need two or three starters at least on this team yet. That means in my opinion we have two or three backups playing starter roles. Yuck.

Agreed. I want one starter on OL and one on DL. Those are NEEDS, not wants. Currently, both our OL and our DL are not good enough to win us a SB, and that's our goal, right? Or should we become like Lions fans and be happy with a 9-7 season?

Whether we build through the draft or FA, I don't care. People can argue until they're blue in the face, but the only thing that matters are results. I think Wolf did a good mix at both. He got his QB, he got his D, he picked up the WR when Brooks went down, he won us a SB. Amazing thing is we won a SB without even a 900 yard rusher, if I remember correctly. That season, it was all pass. (hint, hint, MM)

Thanks Slick.

Wow. Only 7 TDs between our 2 leading rushers?
That proves my point even more.

As I said, hint, hint, MM. Maybe throw on 1st down when we're in the Red Zone instead of run? Remember, the object of football is to score more points than your opponent.

I don't believe in balance. I believe in doing what works and hammering away at what works until they figure out how to stop it. Often, they can't because they don't have the scheme or the personnel to stop it.

"zombieslayer" wrote:

I LOVE this attitude! The primary justification for a balanced attack is to be less predictable so as to "keep the defense honest." But who cares if you're being predictable if they can't stop you? If they can't stop you, you're going to win games (barring late-game defensive collapses, of course), and that's all that matters, right?

I've never been a fan of the "balanced attack." Last year I wanted to throw rotten organic matter at the screen every time I saw Mike McCarthy go away from what was working and try something else . . . all in the name of "balance." Almost without exception, these shifts in tactics killed whatever momentum we had going for us.

A balanced attack, in my opinion, is symptomatic of a mediocre team for much the same reason that a highly efficient company is either teetering on the brink of bankruptcy or is already insolvent.

He'd be a lot MORE confident if he were throwing TDs instead of settling for FGs, that's fo shizzle.

"zombieslayer" wrote:

I couldn't agree more. I was one of the very few guys screaming and yelling whenever Mike McCarthy settled for field goals, until the pattern kept reasserting itself time and time again -- resulting in loss after loss -- and then I started to see a few converts toward the end of the season. I've been a vocal supporter of McCarthy heretofore, but if I see him settling for FGs again this season instead of lunging for the jugular, I will lose faith in him quickly.

If I had to bet, I would say having the Packers fanbase explode if Rodgers struggled, after the Favre fiasco, had something to do with it too. It'll be interesting to see how this year plays out now that that ordeal is behind us.

Excellent point. It will take several years of fanatical support from the Packers fanbase for me to regain the romantic idealism I used to have about Packer Nation. Part of me thinks my happy delusions are shattered irreparably.
