Some commentary from Mike Lombardi:

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/2009/03/diner-morning-news-green-bays-offseason/

"Counting on the draft to help the current team is always a risky proposition since the players you need to make a difference might not be available. Thompson is clearly a very patient man and is unwilling to invest in the free-agent market. As an owner, you love someone working for you whos conservative with your money, but theres a difference between being conservative and not spending at all. The Packers have no interest in free agency, and unless they get a huge advantage in the deal, they will pass on the player. To me, thats like a real estate investor who never buys property, even when the property is sold in a depressed market...For me, a general manager must use all avenues for improvement. Ron Wolf always did."

Thompson didn't sign Joe Johnson...did he? I don't think he did, I think that was a Sherman screw up.

It was. You'd think Michael Lombardi would know that... or at least bother to check.

it was. I'm sick of people comparing Thompson's free agency activity (lack thereof) and Wolf's. It was a completely different time. I'm not saying you shouldn't be disgusted, disappointed, or downright pissed off at Ted. But basing that pissed-offness on how Thompson stacks up to Wolf is misguided and lazy.

That being said, I'm not pissed off at Thompson. I'm glad he didn't do much in free agency. Now, if we lose Collins, Williams, Jennings, Kampman to FA, THEN I'll be pissed off.

Lombardi explained himself better in the comments section (btw, its a good read other than the comment sections at jsonline or other blogs)

nothing is better for me then when I write about the Packers. As a Packer fan since I was a fat kid, I have always loved the franchise. I became a Skins fan when Vince left and went to Washington. But the Packers fans are so passionate and I love reading all the comments here.

My reference with Joe Johnson was that Thompson had to deal with the mess. And often times, dealing with the mess is as bad as making the mess. Just ask our President.

Love the comments

I agree, people seem to put some thought into their comments on NFP.

Thompson looks for win/wins in FA - i.e. winning by getting a player that will improve the team, and winning by not hurting your team's future throwing too much money at the player. It's not too hard to figure out. We just all turn into "please me NOW!" fans during free agency when the big names start to fly around on rumor mill sites.

Huh? Technically you have to actually SIGN a player and he has to do well before you can call him a WIN. I think all GM's are looking for "WINS".

I think Packer fans that want FA's just want the team to improve. In order to do that with FA's you must be willing to gamble. It doesn't mean throwing Gazillions at everyone but if you don't play it's very hard to WIN

I thought my statement was pretty clear. There are two sides to being a GM in FA, the football side and the salary side. That's pretty cut and dry. If you really think Chris Canty/Igor Olshansky/Tony Gonzalez/whoever are more important to the Packers than the core players who are all coming up for FA next year, I guess that's your prerogative. But defend your statement, "if you don't play" in regards to the Packers in free agency. You're saying they don't play at all?

To be fair, they do here too.

I love reading this board. I've found a few dozen people on here who know football and the Packers better than I do.

I didn't think he means to underestimate the knowledge here...I think he and I were discussing the comment sections on the Packer newspapers (more notably jsonline).

beast (30-Jul) : RIP site 😭
Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : Site will die, I have to restart it.
Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : Quinn stinks. Lot of underthrows. (my guess)
