go.pack I see where your coming from but the major difference is the ones in Zero's post is for an off season the ones we are pointing out were on the super bowl rosters.

Who was GM of those teams?

They guy fans like you say did a better job

Whoa! I said that? Where?

You don't seem to get my point.

What trophies do they hand out for "most FA's started" or "most drafted guys started"

If there are guys available via FA or the street corner I would expect our GM to sign them. If he signs guys who fail to improve the team then he is a piss-poor talent evaluator. If he thinks the guys he already has are capable and we end up with a losing record he is a piss-poor evaluator. Fielding a quality team is a lot different than fielding 22 starters who you drafted.

sorry lt i count 10 starters for the steelers

but the other people were right that those teams build thru the draft and not free agency.

Well i posted the link but here you go:

Willie Parker

Travis Kirscke
James Farrior
James Harrison
Ryan Clark
Jeff Reed
Mitch Berger
Gary Russell

hope that helps you.

"dhazer" wrote:

Kirscke, Farrior, Berger, Clark, and Hartwig are the only players out of those who have played on a diffirent team. The rest were Undrafted Free Agents which are much closer to being Draft Picks than the traditional "Free Agent" you were talking about.

Does any of this matter?

Please show me the blueprint on "What combination of guys are needed to win a SB"

Bottom line is talent wins SB. Who cares how they get here and via what method. I want a winner on the field.

I have never been attracted to the "sign a big name guy" mentality. I would much rather see an improvement in the way the team develops the guys that we draft. It takes longer but it's the best way to build a franchise that can be successful over a long period of time. Hopefully all of the defensive and str/conditioning coaches we hired this offseason can get it done. I think it was the right way to go.

"dhazer" wrote:

Sorry Steve i have to disagree on this one, that was the way to do it back in the 70's and 80's when there wasn't a free agency, that just don't work in this day and age. With free agency you will always be losing players to it no matter what so if we stay with the Ted Thompson plan we will always be rebuilding IMO.

"Stevetarded" wrote:

What are you basing this on? Take a look at the Depth chart of the Steelers or Giants. Most of their starters are players that they drafted. A lot of them aren't even high draft picks.

2008 Steelers 10 of the 26 starters werent drafted by the Steelers

I only count 9 Giants Players on that list which weren't drafted by them or undrafted free agents. I am sure you counted Eli Manning which goes completely against the point considering the Giants are the only team he ever had anything to do with.

It does when people claim that TED just HAS to get a high priced free agent..

Then when proven wrong, people change their tune and want to include back up that dont even play as proof that you need free agents

And my point about Sherman, was that people want Ted to spend like Sherman, but in reality what did that get the team?

Dont you rag on Ted for getting back up free agents like Pitt had on their roster during the SB?

now you want to praise Pitt for getting free agent back ups?

You don't build teams via free agency. It doesn't work. You build through the draft. Anyone with a knowledge of the game knows this. People who say you can build via free agency wouldn't be saying this if the Packers had an aggressive GM.

However, the point that needs to be made is you need to use free agency. Yeah I get that Ted Thompson signed Charles Woodson and Ryan Pickett, but he was backed into a corner that year. The team was coming off of a 4-12 season and they needed someone so he actually went out and paid some money. However, when Thompson isn't backed into a corner, he flat out refuses to go big in free agency. That is the problem.

You build via the draft and then you put yourself over the top with a big move or two. This team needs to add a starter. Vonnie Holiday makes sense. Why not Tony G?

It's the lack of activity that is frustrating.

Oh and this talk that some teams have 30 free agents on their roster or whatever. Technically speaking everyone fills their roster out with street free agents, but those guys are no better than a Anthony Smith or Duke Preston. In fact a lot of those players are worse.

Zero's first post is spot on, but obviously those aren't the type of free agents everyone is talking about so this bs that Pittsburgh and New England had 30 free agents is ridiculous. Did they have 30 Ryan Picket like signings?

The answer is No. Their backups were more like Spencer Havner.

Does that count undrafted free agents signed the year they came out? I think for all practical purposes those should count as players drafted. Or players who've never played for another team, if you will.
