Oher was like the fifth rated OT in the draft and Raji was considered one of the better DL to come out of college in awhile. I don't know how you could count on Oher to have a quicker impact than Raji when Oher was very inconsistant in college and is projected to take longer than some of the other OT's before he produces.

No, i like Raji as a 3-4 de. The Mathews pick i cringe at considering what else we could have done there.

I read something about Ryan Grant that may be relevant. It was on a Bears site so who knows how accurate it is.

"When the blocking was there, the Packers rushers particularly Grant, who received 85.2 percent of the carries by halfbacks too often went down on first contact, even when that contact was little more than a couple fingers on an ankle.

According to the independent research firm Stats, Grant broke 16 tackles last season in 324 opportunities on run plays. Only three backs Atlantas Michael Turner, Minnesotas Adrian Peterson and Washingtons Clinton Portis had more opportunities, but Grant ranked 31st among 49 backs who had at least 100 carries with a broken-tackle rate of 4.9 percent. That was down from 6.3 percent in 2007, and even that seems a little low for a back of 6-foot-1 and 226 pounds.

By comparison, Turner (10.9 percent) and Peterson (9.5 percent) led the NFL with 44 and 37 broken tackles, respectively. Not coincidentally, they also ranked 1-2 in rushing yards."

That's a quote from an article on ESPN (I think by NFC North blogger Siefert), so I'd guess it's correct.

What bothers me about that is that he was doing fine breaking tackles until they started messing with him in 2008. I sincerely hope it was just a coincidence, because they're working on him more this offseason as well (lifting his feet up higher etc.).

It reminds me of Longwell kicking fine and then talking about how he was really working to improve his leg strength in the offseason, and then he couldn't hit anything beyond 45 yards.

I think the key to the team this year is the defense. The running game is just an added bonus. GB will be about average in rushing yards again this year and there is nothing wrong with that. Of course we'd all like to see it better, but this is a passing team and will be a passing team for the most part.

The defense needs to improve. 13 wins one year and 6 the other. The difference wasn't the offense, but the defense.

Wells wasn't healthy all year last year, and I'm not sure how many games Tausch was out, but his replacement was absolute dog shit. These are little things that add up to losses whether or not those that argue the 6-10 angle want to admit or not.

In 07 we went virtually unscathed for injuries, but were decimated in 08. Now in 09, we'll see. We are becoming aged in certain areas like corner and LT which are vital cogs to the team. As always I am optimitic.

Biggest problem I saw last year was how opposing D's approached us last year. In 07 they tended to play off more. Brett was established at both carving a defense and giving up picks. In 08 with the immergence of Grant teams tended to clog the middle. They didn't respect Rodgers early on. As Rodgers showed an aptitude to hurt teams in the passing game Grant and Bjak looked better as did the line.
Our Oline looked better in 07 by virtue of quick throws and shy defenses.
This year will b a tell tale year for the Oline to determine if the group can gel and become a cohesive unit. There were some good moves in the draft to increase competition across the line.
I am therefor I think.

So i was looking around and i came up on the 2004 season. The packers forced only like 4 more points then the 08 packers. They both allowed the same amount of points(380). Yet the 04 team was 10-6. So it just made me question. So i started looking at what the packers did different in their wins this season then their losses. I don't really know if these really mean that much but i thought they were interesting,

When Ryan Grant runs 90+ yards in a game the packers are 5-1.

In all 6 wins the Packers rushed for 100+ yards.

So then I looked up how Rodgers peformed when Grant ran for over 90+ yards. Here is what i came up with:

123-171 72.5 comp% 1402 yards 11 TDs + 2 rushing TDs 2 INTs 112 qb rating.

Is this all just a coincidence or is grant and the running game the key

to succeeding?

This is the deceptive part of it all. When we had to throw more, it's usually because we're behind. And running is the opposite.

So often last year our games started to go downhill when Mike McCarthy took the momentum away from our offense by insisting on being "balanced." I agree that ideally, you should be able to do both well, since opposing defenses will attempt to put you out of your comfort zone, but I still think you need to focus on your strength. As Zombieslayer pointed out in that other thread, you don't have to have a great running game to have success. Last year the Falcons lead the league in rushing and made it to the playoffs. The Cardinals were dead last in rushing and made it to the Super Bowl.

So this year, if I see our offense steamrolling through defenses and then have to watch Mike McCarthy dial things back in the name of balance, and if that takes the wind out of our sails like it did last year, I am going to star losing faith in him as a coach. Bring back the 2007 McCarthy, please!
