Wrapping up Packers minicamp

June 23, 2009 8:00 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- The NFC North Winnebago is pulling out of the Bay late Tuesday evening after two fun-filled days at the Packers' minicamp. I'll continue sharing thoughts and observations throughout the next few weeks, but here is what's at the top of my mind now:

1. You won't have too many days here that are hotter than it was Tuesday. By the time coach Mike McCarthy ended the afternoon session -- about 30 minutes early, by the way -- the heat index was 105. At least one player, rookie offensive lineman Jamon Meredith, needed some help leaving the field.
2. Who says Aaron Kampman is having a hard time adjusting to linebacker? I watched him run stride-for-stride with receiver Greg Jennings on a crossing pattern. Kampman was close enough to Jennings that quarterback Aaron Rodgers had to adjust his throw and safety Jarrett Bush broke up the play. (I particularly liked the way Kampman subtly grabbed Jennings' jersey as the ball arrived.) "It was perfect coverage," outside linebacker coach Kevin Greene said. "I couldn't have done it better myself. He was right where he needed to be. ... That's the best you can hype for from the most talented outside linebacker playing the position."
3. One player who is getting plenty of buzz is second-year tight end Jermichael Finley. Granted, minicamp is the perfect environment to be wowed by an athletic player who runs well. Things often change when the pads come on. But if Finley continues his progress, it's hard to imagine him not unseating veteran starter Donald Lee.
4. Allen Barbre took all of the first-team snaps at right tackle while I was watching, but it wouldn't be out of the question for rookie T.J. Lang to eventually win that position -- possibly in time for opening day. Lang fits the profile of the type of offensive lineman the Packers are looking for -- big and mean -- and might just need some experience before he's ready to take over. I could see this eventual starting line for the Packers:

Left tackle: Chad Clifton
Left guard: Daryn Colledge
Center: Jason Spitz
Right guard: Josh Sitton
Right tackle: Lang

Yes, you have to wonder whether veteran Scott Wells, who is sitting out minicamp for health reasons, will be able to beat out Spitz at center.

That's it for now. We'll bring you more as the week progresses.

This guy knows his stuff... great great blogger. I don't think many people are expecting Tauscher to make an impact this season for Green Bay... and by that meaning not being available...

The Biggest Surprise Team In The NFL This Year ..... will be The Packers.

It was a 5 year plan. It is coming together.

I find it refreshing.... This will be just the first of the movement of reporters to start to stand up and notice exactly "What the hell is going on out there."

Just wait for camp... Then the pre season... Then the season... Then the playoffs... Then the Superbowl. Then the parade.

Life is good....

Normally I am all fanboy, but I read that post, and laughed out loud. Not that I hope it doesn't happen, but ... five year plan...

interesting concept. 🙂

Obviously everything is always rosy and upbeat at this time of the year.

But it's encouraging to hear Kampman is adjusting (or it could be worrying that Jennings can't outrun a former DE in coverage).

Finley is so athletic he could become the new 5th member of the Big 5 allowing us to play the TE and still create match up nightmares across the field.

I can't see Tauscher making the roster. We'd have to cut a young guy with upside to make room for a player who may only be useful for half a season. Time will tell I guess.

I'd prefer it to be a 3 year plan myself...

I agree with you Raider, it looks like it was looking like a 5 year plan but it might be pushed to six due to a new defensive scheme.

Good point Krazy.... That is why goals need to be set in sand, not cement.

So they can be adjusted.

With Capers first year turnaround history I don't know why it would have to take another year. Were the teams he worked with more talented? I don't see it.

With Jenkins, Pickett, and Raji, holding down the "3" and adding Kampman in on many of the blitz packages were the other teams he coached better?

If they do get pressure were any of the teams DB's better? I think not. No way he turned teams around with a better defensive backfield than Woodson, Harris, Williams, Collins, and Bigby.

If anything this may be a MORE talented overall defense than any that Capers had on those other teams.

Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Packers sign CB Corey Ballentine
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : I'm not sure how to kill the draft order just yet so it's not so confusing.
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : *to be able
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : and because it's not a dynasty league (which makes a lot more sense to be ability to trade picks)
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Oh I know; I was just exploring and it blew my mind that you could trade picks because of the whole reordering thing
Mucky Tundra (4-Aug) : Zero, I think I preferred my offer: your 1st for my 15th rounder
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : Keep in mind, we do a draft reorder once all members locked in
Zero2Cool (4-Aug) : You can have my 12th Rd for your 2nd round

beast (2-Aug) : I believe it's technically against the CBA rules, but Jerry just calls it a simple unofficial chat... and somehow gets away with it.
beast (2-Aug) : Jerry Jones is infamous for ̶n̶e̶g̶o̶t̶i̶a̶t̶i̶n̶g̶ chatting with players one on one... and going around the agent.
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Oo just saw a blurb saying that Dallas negotiated directly with Parsons and not through his agent

Zero2Cool (1-Aug) : McLaurin nor Micah going anywhere. They will get money
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : the Synder years or do they take care of one of their own?
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Do the Commanders risk losing a top WR with an emerging QB just because he's turning 30 and potentially risk damaging the rebuild from
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Turns 30 this September, plays at a high level and Washington has some cap space I believe
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : More interesting is Washington with Terry McLaurin
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : I would imagine Dallas will resolve this issue with a truckload of money

Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : database is on new host, eventually website will follow
Mucky Tundra (30-Jul) : Zero, regarding Ewers, you are correct.
Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : Sadly, this might be our life for awhile. I could put it on another host, but seems it was slower, although more stable
beast (30-Jul) : How long will it be down?
beast (30-Jul) : RIP site 😭
Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : Site will die, I have to restart it.
Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : Quinn stinks. Lot of underthrows. (my guess)
beast (30-Jul) : How did Quinn Ewers effect where Golden was drafted?
dfosterf (30-Jul) : All I've experienced was late at night or early morning. I just figured you were doing something in the background
Zero2Cool (30-Jul) : Site sure seems to be down more than up
