I think Ruvell Martin has the Poppinga mystique about him -: solid, well-liked but not indispensable.

With the emergence of Jermichael Finley I don't think the depth of the team is compromised, just a ST upgrade with Swain really.

I was really disappointed to see Martin go.

He always seemed reliable when he was on the field and I don't recall him having any issues off the field. Finley has been a beast in the preseason but he also can have a bad case of foot in mouth.

I wonder how much we will see of the pure 5 WR formation with a rookie as our #5.

Ruvall just got caught up in the #'s game, most undrafted FA's get invited to a camp and are released, Ruvall stuck and improved each year.

He was going to take a little more time to develope than other drafted wr's, it is just to bad his time ran out in Green Bay.

He hasn't been signed by anyone as of yet, but the injury bug will hit some team and he will get a chance.

I hope he makes the best of it. Good guy, young solid player, who came out every week and did his job, always trying to improve,

Well I guess Finley could be used as a the 5th WR, but on that formation Full 5WR there is a small chance that the football goes to the 5th WR so in the case Martin had stayed in Green Bay he will not get the football, on the formation 4WR 1TE there is more chance Finley gets the ball. Thats why I don't have a problem with Martin been cut

We don't even have to go 5 wrs, we have the best 4 wrs in the NFL and now have the best TE. Finley will take over for Gates as the best TE. He is a huge matchup problem for people.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

Not worried about 5 WR. Even last year the team did not line them up nearly as much as 07. Martin was pretty situational. He was Tall, and blocked good. I thought he was a good player to have on the team, because of his work and attitude. In the past Ruvells height was a + that the team did not have. Jordy sort of took that away. Not giving much up their. Blocking, all our WR block, so I feel confident that Swain will not be a liability in that respect with the rest of the WR to help him out.

Martin has been on the bubble every year, and finally got bitten. Best of luck to him, maybe he can find his way onto a roster, as long as it isn't MN or CHI.

I do agree that Rodgers did not have much success with 5 WR set last year where Favre exploited it better two years ago.

I also agree that 4 WR and Finley at TE is more dynamic a formation since the TE is usually a better blocker or he can go out as #5. I wonder if we will see alot of that formation given the difficulty it should give the opponents defense but then we kept 3 FBs so we will probably see alot of plays with 3 in teh back field.

Bottom line - It is shame to see Martin go but it is just a statement as to how much talent this team has!

Found this little article interesting, it's about Dietrich-Smith and Swain finding out that they made the team. Makes me hope Ruvell finds another team and gets to keep playing.

http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/article/20090907/PKR01/90907067/1058

"Swain got word he was safe from Ruvell Martin, the guy he was competing with the final receiver spot. After Martin was released, he called Swain to congratulate him on making the team.

Thats how good of a man Ruvell Martin is, Swain said. He said he wanted to give me an early congratulations.

I really liked Ruvell Martin when he came out of nowhere to win a roster spot in training camp in '06, but apparently at that point he had already reached his potential. I didn't see any significant improvement from him in the past couple years.

As for the five WR formation, I'll say again that it only worked for a little while in '07, for the simple reason that it leaves one pass rusher unblocked. Opposing teams figured out that they could play press coverage on each receiver and rush six guys against five linemen, leaving the QB with only about a second and a half to throw the ball.
