For all the attention paid to RE Antwan Odoms five-sack afternoon, the QB takedown that sums up the Packers offensive issues was SLB Rey Maualugas against FB Korey Hall.

Maualuga and S Roy Williams crept to the line before the snap, tipping a six-man pressure. The Packers kept eight yes, eight in to block.

Eight-man protection should make a quarterback feel comfortable he can set his feet, go through his reads and try to hit a big play, which is what QB Aaron Rodgers was looking for with WRs Greg Jennings and Donald Driver working downfield.

But Hall barely got a fingertip on Maualuga as the rookie stuttered and then exploded around the offensive left edge. There also was heat up the middle from DT Jonathan Fanene, who got late pressure against LG Daryn Colledge and was at Rodgers feet as Maualuga drilled him in the back.

Breakdowns like that will make any quarterback skittish. It should be no surprise Rodgers sidestepped into a sack on the Packers next possession rather than trusting LT Chad Clifton and C Jason Spitz to keep Odoms long stunt outside.

On 45 true dropbacks Sunday, the Packers utilized six-man protection 21 times (46.7 percent) and seven-man protection nine times (20 percent), not including plays on which tight ends and running backs chipped before going out in pattern. Only nine times was the offensive line left to fend for itself yet Rodgers was sacked six times and hit four others by a Bengals defense that sent 17 blitzes (37.8 percent).

These are compounding issues that cant be solved simply by keeping in extra blockers on every play. If anything, excessive help can become a crutch, allowing players to get away with lousy fundamentals that need to be fixed before this offense can get back on track.

That's a very good breakdown by Pelissero. He writes some good stuff. I agree that it may be time to let the O-linemen sink or swim in favor of giving Rodgers more options.

problem is the rams suck; and then we got min at their dome. Id rather this get fixed before we even face the rams. And to tell you the truth Im not sure our Oline coach is getting the job done.

Our Oline had a problem last year and now again this year - might it be our coach.

teams are going to keep coming if they know they can take us down with blitzes. If we dont change something throwing more slants and screens; rodgers will get injured.

Watched the highlights of the Az game; now those are nice little passes he throws and keeps the pressure off him; and they kept trying to blitz warner.

From this breakdown, I have to admit I was wrong in thinking extra protection in the backfield would help.

I guess MM is in a bind in that he has to fix a problem that can take teams a full offseason to address.

Yes, if that problem is even acknowledged in said offseason. No one needs me to tell them that we're in trouble here, and no amount of practice, technique, fundamentals and extra blocking by backs and receivers is going to help.

We kept Wynn because he's "better at picking up the blitz." We all see how well that experiment is going.

That's why we kept DeShawn Wynn? I thought it was because he is considered the most 'talented' RB and is better on special teams than Sutton was.

I thought the GB writers were saying it's because he's better at picking up the blitz. Even if it's because of his special teams play, that's hardly shown up either.

Wynn is one of our better RB blockers, though.

Anyone remember the time Wynn pulled an excellent move to pick up a blitzing CB or safety or someone to give Rodgers time to throw deep down the field in one of the games last season? That's the Wynn we need back.

Oh.. there were a couple of times Wynn stepped in and stoned a blitzer.. one comes to mind that was one of the "whoa" type sticks.

Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
