In La Crosse, we have smoky bars and smokefree bars. The rare times I go to a bar in this town, I usually go to the smokefree bars, because I prefer not to walk out with a migraine. That's my point. If there is a market for smokefree bars, people will build them, as they have here. If there isn't a market for them -- that is, if people aren't willing to put their money where their mouth is and patronize smokefree bars -- people shouldn't run crying to the government to do for them what they won't do for themselves, to cover for their own financial cowardice. You know why we have minimum markup laws for gasoline? Because gas stations used to engage in price wars, in which stupid customers would flock to the stations that were offering gas under cost (when it was obvious to anyone with the slightest shred of foresight what was going to happen), then cry bloody murder when the companies secured a monopoly and jacked the prices way up. If the customers had had the sense to patronize the little guys who were offering gasoline at fair prices, we wouldn't need minimum markup laws these days.

It's like the constant debates we have on Student Senate over imposing new segregated fees for every new service the campus wants to offer. "Well, if we don't charge EVERYONE for this wonderful service," proponents wail, "we won't have enough funding to keep it open!" Well, then good riddance, say I. Let the market decide. If the service would go under without mandatory funding, obviously there isn't much of a market for it. Forcing everyone to pay for a service only a tiny minority of students will actually use -- and which they don't even want badly enough to cough up an out-of-pocket fee when they do use it -- is just bad ethics, in my opinion. Every "important service" we offer to students on campus can be found somewhere off campus -- usually for cheaper than we can offer it.

I agree with you nonstop but the thing about smoking is that it went from culturally acceptable to a health hazard. In fact cigarettes used to be recommended by some doctors. But since bars were always allowed to have cigarettes it seems unfair to just take them away even though they risk non-smokers health. It would be easy to give bars the choice to be smoke-free or smoking-allowed but all the bars would pick smoking allowed because they wouldn't have to change anything. The people that don't smoke would keep avoiding the bars and nothing would change. That's why the situation is so hard to control and an outright ban is the only workable solution. Maybe after a few years of having all no-smoking bars they could allow the bars to adopt a smoking-acceptable policy.

I hope you understand what I'm trying to say I'm tired and can't get my ideas across very well right now lol.

As far as universities decisions you have my deepest sympathies. I hate most of the decisions our school makes that I just choose not to get involved. Schools are so good at making money but so bad at spending it. Recently UWM spent money painting flashy logos on all their bus shuttles. It sickens me to think of the other improvements they could have made. I'm going to graduate in the next year and I'll get the hell out.

Actually, I've talked to owners of bars who say they're looking forward to the impending smoking ban because it relieves them of responsibility for being first. It's not that they don't want to be smoke free -- it's that they don't want to be the first to go smoke free. I don't really understand that logic; perhaps someone can explain it to me. My best guess is they're afraid of the ostracization that might come from being the first, since other bar owners would resent having to follow suit? But again that makes no sense, since they claim to want to be smoke free.

I can't wait myself. I've walked out of bars because they're too smoky plenty of times before.

I prefer to do my drinking in the comfort of my own home anyway. Preferably on my couch with a hot, naked girl. Or two.

See I have this problem every weekend. All my friends want to go to the bar and I don't understand it. We just end up doing whatever we'd be doing at home but at the bar except we're paying at least double for every drink we have. My friends wake up the next morning saying "Dammit I blew $50 bucks at the bar last night." Yea, that's what happens.

Yeah.

That's a fraction of the reason I stopped drinking. There was no point at the age of 21 to go to the bar and spend $100 in one night when that same amount would bring more fun for 2-3 nights at home. Not to mention, we didn't have to worry about walking home or getting kicked out or whatever.

Eventually, when I moved away from all my friends/drinking buddies.. I just stopped drinking altogether.
