Interesting little piece about the fact that Kapinos has avoided much criticism this season despite playing poorly.

But judging by the last few years good punting doesn't seem to be key in winning Superbowls.

(of course that doesn't mean it doesn't need fixing.)

What's interesting is that the Super Bowl-winning teams generally haven't had top punters. The last Pro Bowl punter for a championship club was Sean Landeta in 1990. Only five Super Bowl winners have had a Pro Bowl punter, including Landeta twice for the Giants, Ray Guy twice for Oakland and Ron Widby for Dallas.

Here, in chronological order, is how the punters for the last six titlists ranked in net average: 24th, 27th, 29th, tied for 30th, tied for 25th and tied for 21st.

How did they choose six titlists? Was the seventh an anomaly?

This is good news. Kapinos is tied for 32nd in net yardage with the guy from the Patriots. He is truly an awful punter. Remember when he was booming them in training camp? That seems like a distant memory now. As soon as the games started counting, he sucked.

Great, but this doesn't make me feel any better about it. It's not like you win the Super Bowl because your punter sucks.

The only reasoning I can imagine is that you maybe go for it some more on 4th down. Some aggressive offensive playcalling which usually gets you a lot further than punting it on their 40.

Jon Ryan just signed a 6 year, $9.1 million contract extension with the Seahawks. Looks like Ted Thompson let a good one get away.

Maybe our problem with with the ST coaches and not the ST players.

Shows there's more to punting than net average, because Feagles was crucial to the Giants success during their run.

Beats the crap out of the 35-45 grand a year he was getting in the CFL.

Note:

Ryan said to Canadian Press that he was really pleased with Seattle. He said he was not appreciated in Green Bay.

Oh, how I wish that were true. Last year Frost had a gross average of 42.1 yards and a net of 36.1 yards. This year Kapinos had a gross average of 43.8 yards and a net of 34.1 yards. So he's kicking it a bit farther, but he is hitting more line drives, so on average we're two yards worse off per punt than we were last year.

Frost took a lot of heat because it was such a dumb move to get rid of Ryan in favor of him. Kapinos has gotten a break because nobody expected anything out of him anyway. Also, it doesn't seem like he has made as many glaring mistakes as Frost did. Frost had at least a couple of shanks and mishandled a snap that resulted in a safety (although the snap was high).
