I struggled with where to put OJ. I ran up against an intransitivity problem:

1. I like Gifford better than Tomlinson/Taylor/Kelly.
2. I like Tomlinson/Taylor/Kelly better than Simpson.
3. I like Simpson better than Gifford. (Aside: though they were about equal in the "bimbo wife with great legs" category.)

Go figure.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Peterson has two major things going against him.

1. He looks for contact. He wants to run people over, and he takes hits for it. It could easily shorten his career.

2. Fumblitis.

Those are things he can improve on, but you would have expected to see some improvement this year. The kid is good, but not the greatest.

Have you all forgotten about Jim Brown?

Please never mention Emmitt Smith again! It is a sin he took Walters record!

I am not going to argue with Zero again on this one. :)

Below are ten I would put well above Peterson. And below I've highlighted all those currently in the Hall of Fame that I would put above him.

1A. Barry Sanders.
1B. Jim Brown.

3. Gale Sayers.

4. Walter Payton.

5. Erik Dickerson.

6. Earl Campbell.

7. Frank Gifford.

8. LaDanian Tomlinson.

9. Jim Taylor

10. Leroy Kelly.

Heck, if I were to go by the "fucked Packers over" category, AP wouldn't even be the top Viking RB on by list. He'd be third behind Chuck Foreman and Fran "I'm still as big an asshole as I was when I was a player" Tarkenton.

(And, just to prove, to quote Claude Rains, that I'm a rank sentimentalist, let me add the one from the top of my woulda/coulda/shoulda file, Eddie Lee Ivery.)

What about O.J. Simpson? He has to be pushing for that nr. 6 spot, if you ask me.

If you ask me, Jerome Bettis could make a good push to get on that list, as well. He might not've had the great YPC numbers, always, but that has a lot to do with not having break out speed, more so than being a bad RB. If there's anyone who I would want to have running it up the middle, it'd be him. Or maybe Alstott.

And maybe Refrigerator Perry. Lol.

So Peterson is expelled for running behind Hutch, McKinnie, and Birk for his first two years. Emmit Smith is on the list because #1, he is the all time leader in yardage, and #2 the guy play hurt quite a bit, sucked it up and did his job at a very high level for a long time. He was not as talented as the others, just more productive.

I'd definitely put Smith ahead of Peterson. But not in the top 10.

The guy that I had forgotten all about until I checked the Hall of Fame list, the one that absolutely no one knows about, I think has to be Leroy Kelly. People have heard of Sayers and Taylor and Brown and all the rest of the names post-1965 that come up in these discussion.

But when I saw the HOF list I said, "Oh, my God, how could I have forgotten him? He was a friggin' beast. People talk about AP's combination of speed, power; well, I remember watching Kelly...and AP at his best wasn't that good. And he had elusiveness almost in Sayers' league (though not in Sanders), with thighs the size of Earl Campbell's.

Kelly touched the ball 2000-odd times in his career, most as a runner back, but also receiving, returning both kicks and punts. He scored 90 TDs., one every 23rd time he touched the ball. In his regularity of hitting the end zone, he was Tomlinson level. Tomlinson has more TDs because he touched the ball more.

I think the problem was that Kelly came after Jim Brown, and so if you think of "great runner" and "Cleveland", you automatically think Brown and for good reason.

But if you ever have a chance to see footage of Kelly, check him out.

He'll bloody amaze you. He would have dominated today's league.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
