WTF? ... is this the same guy that said Harrell wasn't trying hard enough in practice and talked about how great Wynn was? Only to get quotes saying the coaches think he's wrong

"The kid is working his butt off, said defensive line coach Mike Trgovac. Hes trying hard."

And MM calling out Wynn saying he needs to step up...

And decides to write something else bad about Harrell to hide his mistakes?

I'm not saying Harrell will ever work out or be worth even a 7th round pick but the coaches have been saying writers have been wrong with what they see vs. what going on as far as the coaches see....

So can we really take the writers word over the coach's word?

And yes the coaches do put spin on things, but why spin the Wynn needs to work harder one if it wasn't true?

I'll trust the coaches and the 11 on 11 stuff more than the writers and there watching the one on one linemen drills and saying who looks the most flashy.......

Let's look at this in a realistic manner and not an emotional one.

7 D-linemen make the roster.

NT- is Raji. Pickett moves inside if something happens to Raji. Toribio make the practice squad as insurance.

Jenkins and Neal make the team so we are up to 4.

The last 3 spots are up for grabs between Harrell, Wynn, Wilson, and Talley.

Let's say the Packers go with only 6 D-linemen. Pickett, Jenkins, Raji, Neal and 2 of Harrell, Wynn, Wilson and Talley.

Harrell still makes it. With the Jolly suspension, Harrell makes the team.

Wilson was a 7th rounder teams passed on in the draft. He's done nothing is preseason that would cause a team to claim him before the Packers put him on the practice squad. Nobody signed Talley when they had their chances.

If Harrell gets injured they activate Wilson off the practice squad. They will not cut Harrell.

Excellent post. I think they will only keep six defensive linemen, and if Harrell stays healthy, he will be one of them. I think the balance has tipped in favor of Harrell just in the past couple weeks. If Wilson or Talley were showing any kind of ability, I don't think many people would be in favor of keeping Harrell.

Vandermause is usually okay, but sometimes he writes lazy columns, and this is one of them. It should also be noted that this column was published the day before the Seahawk game, and at that time Vandermause did not think Harrell would play in the game. Well, he did play after all, and apparently he outplayed Wilson and Talley--again.

Do I feel sorry for Harrell? No not really for reasons already stated.

However, there is a difference between Tony Mandarich and Justin Harrell. Harrell has been hurt. He hasn't seen the field, but when he's on the field, I've seen more out of him than C.J. Wilson or Jarius Wynn.

Mandarich was a complete bust. He couldn't cut it as a LT. He ended up in Indy as a guard and was alright for awhile, but there is a difference between the two players. One is a bust because of skill and the other is a bust because of injury.

I pretty much agree with what CaliforniaCheez said.

I think they'll keep six or seven DL. Seven with Toribio, who I've been impressed enough with to keep on the team. Right now, you can only justify Wilson or Wynn above Harrell because of injuries/confidence.

It's all good. You don't need to leave if he makes the team. It's never like that here. I think it's perfectly fair to release him if you believe he's not going to be reliable enough to play. It's just not as simple as 1+1=2.

If Johnny Jolly were here, then maybe you make a move, but he's not. So I think he stands a good chance to make this team. Wynn or Wilson are both practice squad eligible and I could see one or both of them on the squad. If something comes up with Harrell, then IR or release him and promote one of those two.

Of course, he could sit out all week and that puts an end to that. How his back respond to playing game is a big deal. Last week, he did have a flare up. But this is another week and the game is only in a few days. It'll be a good test to see how quickly he can respond.

I do think that Harrell's work ethic has been called into question by this whole thing, but I have yet to see proof that he's lazy. And he looks okay when he plays, so I give him the benefit of the doubt.

I'm not sure I understand your zeal about this, to the point of being willing to leave the board if Harrell stays healthy. Why not just be happy that the guy is able to contribute to our team?

That's right, I forgot about him being held out of practice that one day because of the heat. Not a good thing, but it was one day of practice early in training camp, and I don't see it as a big deal.

I'm not sure what you are referring to when you mention my "zeal to keep believing something that keeps proving to be something else." You're the one who's volunteering to leave the board if he's wrong about this. That seems a little over the top to me.

I don't have any special fondness for Harrell. Like most fans, I thought he was a highly questionable pick, and I've been very disappointed that he's been injured so much. I just think that if he's one of our six best defensive linemen he should be on the roster. Pretty simple.

The coaches and medical staff know a lot more about Harrell's health than we do, and that will factor into the decision whether or not to keep him at the end of training camp. I'm leaning toward keeping him because if Wilson is put on the practice squad, I doubt that he's going to get taken by another team. It's a risk I'd be willing to take.

Absolutely terrible reporting. To say he hasn't practiced since Friday, and not even mention the fact that his wife had an emergency c-section Wednesday evening, is irresponsible reporting. MM said after practice Thursday, that Harrell was going to practice that morning. His back was NOT the reason he missed practice.

I understand criticizing Harrell for not showing a lot of intensity in practice, but this article was just dumb.

This isn't a case of bad reporting. It's clearly labeled as a column -- that is, an opinion piece. He can say whatever he wants in a column.

If Harrell is one of the six best defensive linemen we have on this team, I think we need to go out and bring in some more talent. I'd rather have a lineman who's less talented but is consistently available than someone who has to walk on eggshells every time he takes the field.
