Shields Takes Lead For Nickel Job

Posted by Pete Dougherty August 29th, 2010, 3:51 pm

Undrafted rookie Sam Shields unlikely climb continues.

Based on practice Sunday, it looks like Shields has a real shot at being the Packers No. 3 cornerback for the regular-season opener at Philadelphia.
With starting cornerback Al Harris in essence ruled out of that game, and with Brandon Underwood out with a shoulder injury, Shields worked with the No. 1 nickel defense ahead of Pat Lee at practice Sunday.

Its unclear whether Shields is ahead of Underwood, but its a possibility, and either way Underwoods availability for Thursday night in the preseason finale at Kansas City is in doubt. If Shields plays well Thursday, he presumably will be the first cornerback off the bench against the Eagles the following week.

(Shields) is here to play football and win the job, just like everybody else, safety Nick Collins said. Right now hes making more plays than everybody else. Hard work pays off.

A remarkable story.

A undrafted rookie who converted from WR to CB in his last year at college starts the season as the nickel corner for one of the Superbowl favourites.

I do wonder what the over/under is for Shields' interceptions this year in real game action. I'm going to go with 4 and see which way the money shifts.

I gotta say I agree with this call. Shields is raw and he hasn't been perfect, but Underwood and Lee have been awful at times. In fact, I think Lee is on the bubble. I probably won't project him to make the team.

Is this an indication of how well shields has played or how poorly Lee and Underwood have played? I guess we'll find out against Philly.

I'd agree with you if only Al Harris had been practicing.

That he hasn't, I am thinking more and more each day that he starts on PUP and we keep both Bush and Lee.

I think it's more the latter, unfortunately. Their performances in the preseason games have been shaky. The beat reporters have been saying that Lee and Underwood have looked good in practice, but for whatever reason, they have not been impressive in game action.

I have to admit that this story shocked me, yet I realized immediately that it makes complete sense to move Shields ahead of those guys. I hope he gets as much action as possible against KC's starting offense on Thursday.

I really like Shields, I felt so bad for him when he had his issues catching punts and kick offs in the first game.

He's my underdog of the 2010 training camp that I have been rooting for to make the team. I hope he continues to improve and make the team in some form.

Well done Sam I say!

It's quite sad to think how much Pat Lee's star has faded as a former second round pick. Both he and Underwood were being talked up at the start of the pre-season. Yet, Shields is now certainly ahead of Lee on the depth chart, and might be ahead of Lee.

Shields seems to have all the intangibles to play the position, but he's massively raw. I'd definitely have him on the roster, but I fear pushing him to the #3 spot so soon might be disastrous.

Yeah, that's why I think that if the coaches were reasonably confident in Underwood or Lee, they would not be making this move. It is a contrast to the Colledge/Bulaga situation, where Colledge has played well enough to stay ahead of Bulaga, because why change something that's working?
