I feel like the most surprising release had to be Blackmon. He's the only threatening return man we've had in years.

I think the Packers may have released him instead of putting him on IR so they could bring him back in a couple weeks if needed.

Thoughts?

We can only bring him back after week 10. Any other team can pick him up immediately.

Why? Eagles just cut Jean-Gilles and resigned him? Is it b/c we did an injury settlement?

I think we told Blackmon we'd put him on IR, or we did, but then came to an injury settlement which means we can't have him on our active roster before week 10, but any other team can ... because they didn't claim he did not sustain season ending injury of some type.

^ To add to Zero's post, I believe an injury settlement stems from the fact that a player, after being placed on IR, still thinks he can play (or player sooner than the team thinks). It is obvious the Packers felt Blackmon's rehab was not coming along too well... and maybe they thought they would have Blackmon shut it down for the year, which Blackmon did not agree with.

With difference of opinions, both parties might decide to reach an injury settlement.

The thing I would like cleared up, though, is that an injury settlement pays a player for specific number of weeks that he would have spent on IR. I'm not sure whether that means Blackmon is immediately a free agent, or whether we will not be a free agent before the number of weeks he was paid to be on the IR for.

Basically, we can pay him half his salary and if he heals up, is still unclaimed, we can sign him back and pay the remainder of his salary for his services?

I liked him coming out of college. He just seems to be hobbling more than running.

Not necessarily half, it depends on the negotiations between the Packers and Will's agent.

For example, the Packers may think he needs the rest of the year to recover. However (and this is pure conjecture) Blackmon may have felt he would have been ready in three weeks.

So then the Packers would have negotiated, and paid Will for however many weeks he would have been on IR. Then if we want to sign him again, it'll be dependent on the contract we agree to. Probably the minimum for a player with Will's experience, I think. I do not see him getting similar to the contract he got as a rookie - which, as it was in its fourth year - would have paid Will more than the minimum.

I know it's not half his salary, its a settlement, meaning the parties come to an agreement. It's an example.

lol I just read an article where Slocum was he's fine with the return game because Blackmon will be healing up soon and it'll be a better special teams with all the 1's out there.

The article was posted yesterday. I'm not sure when the quotes were stated.
