Just finished watching the Lions/Bears game.

Not at all impressed with either teams offense. Bears look terrible. Lions look just as bad even with Stafford playing. That 2nd to last play of the Lions should have sealed the deal and a win for the Lions. What a stupid rule.

I believe the Lions will still end up in last in NFC North but the Bears will be a distant 3rd to the Pack and Vikings.

Sloppy game all around.

The stupidity of the rule robbed the Lions for sure. From what it looked like to ignorant me, that was a catch with two feet down. I don't know why they changed that rule.

I agree. He had full control when he hit the ground. I think the Lions were robbed big time.

Like it or not, Calvin Johnson call correct

September, 12, 2010

By Kevin Seifert

CHICAGO -- OK, first things first. I know everyone is talking about Calvin Johnson's touchdown-turned-incomplete-pass, the one that would have given the Detroit Lions a victory against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field but instead was their third-to-last play of a 19-14 loss.

I'm sorry to tell you this, Lions fans, but the call was 100 percent right based on NFL rules. In fact, the play is similar to the one we discussed last season in the Dirty Laundry feature that explained why Green Bay Packers receiver Greg Jennings lost a touchdown against the Bears. Again, here is the wording of the NFL rules that applies to both catches:

If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact by an opponent), he must maintain control of the ball after he touches the ground, whether in the field of play or the end zone. If he loses control of the ball, and the ball touches the ground before he regains control, the pass is incomplete. If he regains control prior to the ball touching the ground, the pass is complete.

I know it doesn't make intuitive sense. I know Johnson made a leaping catch of a 25-yard pass from Shaun Hill. There is no doubt he had two feet in bounds while maintaining possession. But Johnson dropped the ball after he landed on the ground and didn't regain possession.

I didn't like the rule last year and I don't like it now. But based on the wording of above, officials were correct to overturn the original touchdown call and rule it incomplete. The same goes for the booth replay official, who upheld the decision. Like it or not, that play is an incomplete pass in the NFL.

To their credit, the Lions mostly agreed.

"The rule is if you are going to the ground in the process of making the catch, you need to finish with the football," coach Jim Schwartz said. "And we didn't finish with the football."

Johnson was less diplomatic but ultimately didn't challenge it.

"We have to move past it," Johnson said. "Can't do nothing about the call. I'm not saying nothing about the referees or nothing like that. It is what it is."

Unfortunately for the Lions, "it" was an incomplete pass.

What irks me about this call was that Johnson didn't lose control of the ball. He very deliberately surrendered it -- after he thought the play was over. How long do you have to maintain possession? Until you're touched/downed by an opponent? Until the whistle blows? Until you're back on your feet?

How does one determine if a player laid the ball on the ground or he lost control

The rule needs to be reworked. End of.

Then they should undo EVERY TD call when a player spikes the ball after catching it. That's basically what happened with Johnson, only he just put the thing on the ground. He had both feet in bounds, landed on his ass.. put the ball down and got up.

The call, even with the ridiculous rule, was a damn TD.

How does one determine if a player laid the ball on the ground or he lost control

That's a good question. I still say it was a Touchdown and the rule needs to be changed. A petty rule like that should not dictate the outcome of a game. He had possession with two feet an ass. I don't recall exactly, but when I seen it, it looked like he used the ball to prop himself up and let the ball out of his hand.

Edit, I found a clip and watched it. The ball was dislodged by the ground which is obviously noted when you see Johnson's hand clasp at air. If he was releasing the ball, his hand wouldn't clasp like it did. I still say it was a catch as he had two feet, one ass and possession.

Edit2, here's a clip of it with replays. The ground caused the ball to be dislodged from Calvins hand. He should have held it tight to his body throughout the duration of the catch which would have won the game. I still don't like the rule and think it should have been a catch.

I may be the only person who LIKES the "going to the ground" rule in the NFL. Why do I like it? Its black and white. Either you maintain control of the ball all the way, or you don't. What I don't like....judgement calls. Theres no judgement here. Its either one way or the other.
