Across the board, the Vikings have more talent than the Packers at nearly every position," the evaluator told PFW.

I don't think the doom or gloom is coming from any pre-season game. I think it's coming from how the team played last year.

You mean when they were second in the league in total defense, first in run defense, and fifth in pass defense, including a respectable 11th in sacks? Yes, they beat up on some bad teams and played poorly in four games against elite QB's, but no matter how you slice it, this was a darn good defense last year and there are reasons to believe they could be even better this year (hopefully more health in the secondary, stability at the safety position, and improvement of the young OLBs, to name a few).

I remember in 1995/1996, it would be late in the game. And it was like Reggie White would look at Sean Jones and say, "First one to the quarterback wins." And sure enough, a sack or two at the perfect time. It was like you knew the D was going to come through.

Maybe that's the way it seems when we look back on it, but that's not the way it was. What happened when the 1995 Packers ran into the elite offense of the Dallas Cowboys in the '95 playoffs? They got their asses kicked, that's what. They collapsed in the fourth quarter and gave up a total of 38 points. The next year they had the best defense in the league, with only a couple of lineup changes, and they won the Super Bowl.

As for Matthews and Jones, I don't care HOW they get to the QB as long as they get to the QB. A sack is a sack, whether it's a speed rush or a bull rush, and typically OLB's, being much smaller than OT's, rely mostly on speed to get to the QB.

I think we had that discussion before, but there are a lot of guys in the league, playing at the OLB position, who most ly rely on strength and overpower LTs and RTs.

Lamarr Woodley, Brian Orakpo, James Harrison, Shawne Merriman and Tamba Hali come to mind.

And, of course, DeMarcus Ware, who can do it all.

I haven't seen many people calling Clay Matthews "elite." He's just good with lots of potential to improve. Nothing wrong with that.

He got to the Pro Bowl in his rookie year. He should improve.

He's got football smarts and generations of experience in his blood.

He should be an elite player sooner than later.

Criticisms of his rushing are he has but one move. Well, that will change. Give the kid some time to grow and learn from experience.

They won't blow you away like DTs, obviously, but a guy like Lamarr Woodley is 265 at 6'2 and plays very physical. He takes on RTs one on one, but just moves incredibly well for his size, as well.

Pretty much what we hoped Kampman would turn out to be at OLB.

They're as legit as contenders as any other team in the league, given they've played all of one preseason game.

I think you have to let the preseason play out and see how the team looks - are there injuries? Did someone you expected to play well play poorly? Hell, look at Minnesota - their top two receivers look like they might not even be healthy to start the season, and that changes things quite a bit in terms of expectations.

If the Packers get through the preseason healthy and the rookies and younger players show the improvement we've been hearing about on the field, then yes, they have a realistic shot. Same as a number of other teams in the conference.

Too early to tell.

Go to the Simmons thread.. and IMO see how it is done. Raw.. unscripted.. emotional and firing the piss out of the defense.

Piss on the TO scripted type celebration.. at least for me.
