If it's not one thing, it's another.

You see what I'm saying?

When I was about 11 years old, my dad and I were at his buddies house, Pull-man was his name. Whenever he spoke, he finished his sentence with "know what im sayin". Dad had pounded it into my head that you say what you mean, and mean what you say. So this as you can guess, brought up questions on my end.

Pull-man: blah blah blah, know what im saying

Me: no (Pull-man hesitated for a moment, then continued)

Pull-man: this went here, blah blah, that went there, know what im saying

Me: no

Pull-man: what huh ... ah why do you keep sayin no for?

Me: cuz you're in the middle of telling me and keep asking if I know what you're saying,

Pull-man (to my dad): what's he talking about?

Dad: son, don't be rude, let him finish telling you what he has to say.

Pull-man wasn't all there upstairs, but I didn't know that at the time. It just bothered me that he kept asking me a question before he was even done with what he was telling me. It distracted me, lol.

Guilty.
I say half that crap.

My family's from Chicago and they say "I says." WTH? Half of them have college degrees and still say "I says." Crack smokin' family members.

I'll say goofy things for the purpose of being goofy. I might throw in a "I says you grounded kid!" if Lydia asks if she can have a boy over.

One of my all time favorite clients, a nice older man how always had a smile and reminded me of my old granddad always always always said, "You know what I mean?" in the middle of his stories. IT WAS DISTRACTING. I took it for years without saying much. Fianlly I caught myself answering him. "Yes I know what you mean."

Sometimes I cut him off.

He: "You know what I..."
Me: "Yes I know what you mean." Or simply, "I know what you mean."

He would continue on. The man was not stupid by any stretch just an old man with a quirk. I would get so mad at myself for being rude. But I just couldn't help myself.

Later I noticed he was catching it himself. He would say "You know what... " or "You know..." and stop there. I would be nodding my head yes. He would smile and continue on with his story.

If I could take it all back and just keep my mouth shut I would. Just in case it hurt his feelings. I don't know if it did or did not. He never said. Now he is gone.

(Bad time to ask me this question.....end of term, lots of grading, etc etc. [grin1] )
