GREEN BAY — Josh Sitton joked about it at first, but the Green Bay Packers Pro Bowl guard wasn't joking when he was asked if his friend and linemate, left tackle Bryan Bulaga, should really try to play with what NFL sources have said is a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

Sitton, who played next to Bulaga on the right side from 2010 through 2012 before the Packers switched up their offensive line and moved both men to the left side this offseason, said he didn't even know Bulaga had hurt himself during Saturday night's annual Family Night Scrimmage at Lambeau Field. Bulaga played roughly 30 snaps in the scrimmage, and coach Mike McCarthy said Bulaga suffered the injury on the seventh play.

"He looked good the entire time. I know he played a good number of plays with it hurt, so he looked fine to me. He made all of blocks," Sitton said. "I think he should just brace it up and play."

That's apparently what Bulaga is at least considering doing, as he sought a second opinion on the diagnosis — reportedly from renowned orthopedist Dr. James Andrews — and the Packers haven't officially ruled him out for the season.

But when asked if he thought Bulaga should in fact brace up the knee and play, Sitton turned serious.

"If he does try to go? I would think he's stupid," Sitton said. "He's got a career to worry about. It's not just about this year when you have something like that, so it would be dumb. But to go however many plays he went with it, whatever it is, he's a tough son of a bitch."

Asked if he thought Bulaga could really play with a torn ACL, Sitton replied, "I don't have a clue. I'm not a doctor. I have no clue. I didn't look at his MRI."

Nobody wants him to risk his career, but if the doctors say there is no risk of it getting worse from normal use, and if he wants to give it a try, and if he can play without diminished quality, a LOT of ifs, then let him go for it. He wouldn't be the first who played with a torn ACL.

I read that a partial tear is not always debilitating and not likely to get worse. Yet the treatment for a partial tear is the same as for a complete tear - total reconstruction of the knee. There is risk that way too, and a sure thing of being out a long long time.

If he decides to play, I HOPE he gets support rather than criticism, and no bullshit about liability issues, etc.

well here is to hoping the news isn't as bad as it seems ... and no idea how acl tears work and recovery; just know that people have a rough time (al harris etc)

I hope he can play (like the guy; we need him vs the bears :)

I thought they might consider this.

We'll see what Andrews says. John Elway played his whole career missing two ligaments, iirc.

Then again, he wasn't a LT.

As I've posted before, structure isn't the same as functionality. As an acupuncturist, I could give him functionality, but I would also strongly caution that he let the structural integrity get right.

White - Wasn't a season..

It was December 3, 1995 when the late-great Reggie White left the game against Cincinnati with was viewed as a possible season-ending hamstring injury. But they called it a miracle. The Cincinnati Bengals (5-7 at the time), took a 10-3 half time lead against a Packers (8-4 at the time) team that would eventually reach the NFC Championship game. Cincinnati wouldn't score again and Jeff Black threw two fourth quarter interceptions, giving the Packers an eventual 24-10 win. [Note: Only one of 10 possessions during the game did Cincinnati's offense generate more than 20 yards]

Reggie White left the game and Jay Sorgi of 620 WTMJ writes, missed the following week against Tampa Bay. Then he was recovered.

"I can't explain it. I can't explain why it didn't hurt as bad as it it," explained White about White's incredible return to action less than two weeks after the injury..

"Don't ask me to explain all this. You can't explain it, really," said his coach Mike Holmgren.

I was wrong about the ACL on Elway.. Advantage Nerd. Learned something today.. lol.

Elway has been playing without an anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. He completely tore the ligament while making a cut during a high school football game.

Speaking of "Pack93" hahahaha, don't forget the Gilbert Brown bicep when talking about toughing it out.

From the news put out so far, it doesn't seem to even be at that "toughing out" point - Bulaga apparently feels normal enough to play without pain or sacrifice - any more than any NFL player feels. The question is whether there is risk of it getting worse or doing permanent harm. I'm thinking 60/40 he plays the season, 70/30 he tests it in at least one preseason game.

Whenever I hear this kind of "toughing it out" talk with a major injury, I think back to the "hurricane game" against Chicago several years ago.

At halftime of that game, two Bears were honored. Two of the greatest Bears ever. Two of the three Bears I can honestly say I was a major fan of. One whose career was ended by an ACL tear (Gayle Sayers). The other who may have been one of the 2 or 3 toughest players I've ever seen play (Dick Butkus).

Sayers' walk still hinted at that amazing smoothness he had when running. Butkus? He looked like someone who needed a walker trying to walk without one.

I know, people are going to tell me that sports medicine has improved by leaps and bounds since the days Sayers and Butkus played. And it has.

But that is more a matter of people being able to rehab/take the field earlier, than it is a matter of ensuring that the abuse of "playing injured" won't lead to today's players looking like Butkus.

If the Packers can get to the last few games of the season without Bulaga, then they're going to be able to get through the Super Bowl without him.

Put him on IR and be done with it. It's the right thing to do.

Mike, don't let yourself even be tempted to emulate that other Mike, the one in DC.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Does a partially torn ACL put the other 'CLS at higher risk? If not, I say let him play unless Andrews says not to for some other reason. As stated, if he plays he risks the surgery and being lost for the season; if he sits he guarantees it.

Martha Careful (18h) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (19h) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : And the OL protections seem to be good.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : I really don't know lol. I don't see him getting blown up.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : -3 buwahhhahaaha
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : 4th
Zero2Cool (9-May) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (9-May) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : For now...
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers go about evaluating their "best five," OL coach Luke Butkus makes on thing clear: "Josh Myers is our center."
beast (8-May) : Though I'm a bit surprised letting go of CBs, I thought we needed more not less
beast (8-May) : It was confusing with two DB Anthony Johnson anyways
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers wanted to draft Ray Lewis. Ravens stole him.
Martha Careful (6-May) : Happy 93rd Birthday to the Greatest Baseball Player of All-Time...Willie Mays
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Walter Stanely's son
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : and released CB Anthony Johnson and DL Deandre Johnson and waived/injured WR Thyrick Pitts (thigh-rick).
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : The Green Bay Packers have signed WR Julian Hicks, OL Lecitus Smith (luh-SEET-us) and WR Dimitri Stanley
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Petty, but it's annoying me how the NFL is making the schedule release an event.
Mucky Tundra (4-May) : @mattschneidman Matt LaFleur on how he tore his pec: “Got in a fight with the bench press. I lost.”
Zero2Cool (3-May) : Jordan Love CAN sign an extension as of today. Might tak weeks/months though
TheKanataThrilla (3-May) : Packers decline 5th year option for Stokes
Mucky Tundra (3-May) : @ProFootballTalk Jaylen Warren: Steelers' special teams coach has discussed Justin Fields returning kicks.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Season officially ending tonight for Bucks ... sad face
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Giannis Antetokounmpo is listed as out for tonight's game.
dfosterf (2-May) : Surprisingly low initially is my guess cap wise, but gonna pay the piper after that
dfosterf (2-May) : The number on Love is going to be brutal.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
beast (1-May) : Why can't the rookies be a day 1 starter? Especially when we grabbed 3 of them at the position
dfosterf (1-May) : Not going to be shocked if Gilmore goes to the Lions.
dfosterf (1-May) : I hear you dhazer, but my guess would be Gilmore Colts and Howard Vikings from what little has been reported.
Mucky Tundra (30-Apr) : S learn from McKinney who learns from Hafley who learns from the fans. Guaranteed Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
dhazer (29-Apr) : And what about grabbing a Gilmore or Howard at CB ? Those are all Free Agents left
dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : I miss having Sam Shields.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Not that he's making excuses, just pointing it out
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : That's for dang sure. Make our erratic kicker have no excuse!
packerfanoutwest (28-Apr) : having a great long snapper is gold
Zero2Cool (28-Apr) : LaFleur looking like he had some weight. Coachin will do that lol
