Browns cut Dansby in a rebuilding mode.

http://espn.go.com/blog/cleveland-browns/post/_/id/18300/releasing-karlos-dansby-makes-browns-younger-but-not-better

He's starting to get up in age, and his production slipped slightly in 2015, but he still put up good numbers and looks like he still has another year or two left in the tank.

He was set to earn $5M this year, and we might be able to get him for a reasonable 1-2 year contract.

Exactly the type of player the Packers could use for depth and experience. Ted loves cut players as they don't cost a precious draft pick. Bring him in for a look..kick the tires and see what he will cost for a 2 year stint.

The money is there, Dansby or Cook, who wants to step up first and claim it?

ROLL CALL: Who would you rather get, Dansby or Cook? I guess I could go either way. Hell, I trust Ted even if he wants to get neither.

I always find it difficult to say anything about potential signings like this. He's a 35 year old linebacker who's been in the league since 2004 and has started nearly every game. He can't be far from done.

On the other side, he played decent football last year and certainly showed he had more left than our ILBs will, most likely, ever have.

It all comes down to pricing and length of contract, then. You have to hope you can either get him for one year or structure a multi year deal that gives you as little dead money as possible if you cut him after one season.

Then you still have to factor in the other teams. Dansby has chased money over succes his entire career, signing with the Dolphins and the Browns. The Raiders or Giants, for instance, have ILB situations they can upgrade and have shown to be more than willing to spend.

I see very little upside. I'd favor adding youth, or evaluating long-term potential over adding some 1 year stop-gap solution.

I'm ashamed to admit this publicly but I still have a glimmer of hope for Carl "hair on fire" Bradford but adding an old fart pushes guys like Carl down the depth chart all for a marginal short term gain. If Dansby was on the other side of 30, sure, it's not just gum in a leaking dam. This just feels like Hardly Nickerson.

Isn't the idea to upgrade the roster for the coming year?
I'm not pushing for Dansby but if he provides an upgrade over what we have now I guess I'd be in favor of giving him a look.

To my mind, both are worth "kicking the tires on". And if the tires are shown to have sufficient tread for 1-2 years in a professional evaluator of their physical talent (i.e., team evaluative personnel, coaches, etc), IMO Thompson shouldn't treat it as "either or". The Packers' needs are such that the choice should be "try to sign both".

No one on the Packer roster at those two positions has shown themselves as entitled to no FA competition for a starting job any more than they have shown themselves as entitled to no newly drafted competition for a starting job.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

I say we just focus on players that are low risk, medium reward. It's worked out well the last few seasons with multiple Super Bowl trophies.

I get there are many more layers to that onion, but the overall point is they favored long-term potential over short-term solutions. Jeff Saturday was a recognizable name who instilled more confidence than an unproven EDS but Jeff quickly became a liability.

I'm not saying Carl is the answer either, I just don't sense Dansby is that much better, especially in a role the Packers need. Their issue is their ILBs can't cover. I don't see how a 35 year old helps that.

This staff aren't brainiacs when it comes to knowing their own players. This is the team that put BArclay and then Sitton at LT last year, only giving Tretter a shot 3 weeks later.
