Somehow, the o-line got their shit together that second half of '07. I can't explain it any better than I can explain how they've failed to do so since, but that's my explanation. Grant wasn't ever good enough to make his own holes, and he isn't now - that's not the kind of RB he is.

I realize that repeatedly pointing to the o-line gets old, but it is what it is.

First off the Larry Johnson reference is much more apropos -- although I'm not convinced that in Grant's case it is an issue of "effort."

I know one thing that was different in '07: the tackle play was considerably better. Cliffy and Tauscher at two-years younger looks a lot better than what we've got now. Neither were great in the run game, but that was a pass first team (that somehow defied football logic and seemed to use the pass to open the run).
William Henderson didn't have to run people over. His preferred method was levitation.

In order for our run game to succeed Ryan Grant has to run the ball at least 20 times. Why? Because with our run blocking it takes that many tries to open up some holes for Grant. And when they do Grant takes advantage of it. Only knock i have on Grant is he runs with his head down too much.

I agree. Although I don't know if it is "because" of our run blocking. A lot of teams have to get the volume of carries up to establish the run game. We're no different. Although, again, it makes no sense to run a bunch of times against Minnesota -- and if our lack of running production is in question here, we absolutely have to take into account the fact that we've played a shutdown run defense twice this short season.

Ryan Grant has something like 5.4 yards per carry career against the Vikings. (haven't checked into that, seen it on a graphic)

Edit, decided not to be lazy.

'09
11 51 0
10 30 0

'08
12 92 0
16 75 1

'07
3 17 0
25 119 1

384 yards on 77 carries, 4.987 yards a carry. Looks like Grant should be given more carries against the Vikings ... wait ... those were probably all garbage time yards when we were A, Behind and the defense was expecting a Pass, or B, we were ahead and the defense knew we were running and still couldn't stop it.

lol

I don't know. I want Barry Sanders on our team, now. Noel Devine?

Go to the download section and download some of the videos from the 07 season and watch the holes Ryan Grant had. Its a night and day difference compared to this season.

This I can see. The real question is why.

Why could the same guys then (Colledge, Wells, Spitz, Clifton) do it then but not this year.

Maybe it is down to the play of the OTs but that seems a huge performance swing on the play of just 2 players. And Barbre is supposed to be ok in run blocking.

Grant in 07' was able to knock off big runs which made his stats look great. But he was still the same runner. Only difference, on them big plays, he was never touched.

Contact brings down Grant, he runs leaning to far forward, which makes him extremely susceptible to arm tackles, and limits his cutting ability.

The holes were definitely larger, but it seems like he broke a lot of 2nd level tackles in the secondary to break free for long runs in '07. Maybe I'm thinking too simply, but he doesn't look like the same player to me.

It seems like he's not making it too that second level -- which has to put a significant part of the blame on the o-line.

I dunno either, though. It's a bit of a mystery. Grant looked like the real deal in '07.

That playoff game against Seattle had me convinced that he would be solid for years to come. Maybe when the o-line gets figured out he will be again. But right now, he's not keeping any defensive coordinators up at night.
