Holy shit. An awful defense would be an improvement.

Wow. That's terrible.

Things won't change without the guys on top changing. Ted Thompson and Mike McCarthy have shown incredible resistance to making the big changes that seemingly everyone else can see. Those guys need to go. They are not good for the franchise anymore.

If they don't go, then Capers will be here next year and 2018 will be more of the same.

I dislike the RZ Scoring Efficency all by itself... because if a team gives up 20 touchdown of all over 20 yards, then those touchdowns don't count against the team using the metric.

These two stats should go together, because efficiency and opportunity go together: According to teamrankings.com  the Packers are 31st in Red Zone TD Efficiency, BUT the stat leaves out that the Packers defense is 11th in Opponents Red Zone Attempts per game with an average of 2.8 times per game (which is 11th best).

In other words, the Packers defense completely sucks at stopping teams in the red zone, but they're fairly good at stopping them from getting into the red zone.

The two most important stats (IMO) are
• opponent offensive points per game  (Packers ranked 25th)
  • and

takeaways per game  (Packers rank 9th).
I have grown tired of the shit show. All of the problems on the defensive side would take hours to list off.

I hear people crying "injuries! But the injuries!" While they DO factor in our defensive problems, one should finally be asking why we are ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS banged the fuck up EVERY FUCKING YEAR?!? Is it the conditioning staff? Is it Mike not getting his guys ready for full contact? When it happens every season - you can't continue to blame it on bad luck.

Dare I mention 3rd and long? Might as well be 1st and 10 because the next play will be anyway. If you can't have anyone covering the middle of the field - which is where you typically go on 3rd and long, you might as well just retire. There are times where it will be open due to an extra blitzer or trying to predict your opponent's next move - but when it is uncovered 90+% of the time, guess where they are looking first. If we as fans can see it, then Dom sure as fuck should see it.

I almost lost it when I saw Olsen running free last weekend. If that isn't proof that change is needed, dare I ask what is?

If Mike is willing to keep Dom for next season, he should be kicked to the curb. Blind loyalty is a terrible thing in coaching. I appreciate what he did for our last SB run, but we haven't seen anything resembling that since. There comes a time when you need fresh ideas, and if you aren't part of the solution - you need to move on.

We are all tired of excuses.

    Per drive
    Yards-34.63 (28) Points-2.22 (32) turnovers-.139 (8) INT-.076 (17) Fumble-.062(4) Plays-6.40 (30) TOP-3:05 (32)
    TD-.243 (31) FG-.174 (24) Punts-.375(29) 3andOut-.194 (29)
    Points/RZ trip - (32), TD/RZ trip -(31)

May as well add 3rd down %-(30th), 4th down %-(32)

Pretty much the only thing they were decent at is forcing fumbles and around average at INTs but forcing a punt is also a turnover so the net there on actually getting the ball back is still not good. If they were actually good at stopping teams from getting in the red zone or not it doesn't really matter because they gave up points one way or the other.

Overall one of the more miserable defenses to watch from this team that I have seen.

I think Dom Capers is a good defensive coordinator, but statistically his defenses decline after the first couple years. I truly believe if we bring in someone else, we will be a top ten in scoring (that's all that matters people) defense. We have talent on defense. We see the flashes of it.

I don't know who would be good. I wouldn't mind the Bears firing everyone and us plucking Vic Fangio. He did well with 49ers and seems to do more with that Bears crappool than he should.

  • How does "so many long drives" give you "less opportunities" to get into the red zone? If anything, it'd be the other way around... more long drives give you more opportunities to get in the red zone.
It's also how our efficiency can be so awful as far as scoring but the overall points allowed isn't as low. The problem there is if you are going to give up long drives like that you have to get a stop at some point or force FGs because your teams offense will have less possessions. If you give up a long drive but allow TDs it's shit because your offense now has to match that but has less time to do it.

Our D was 21st in points/game but they faced the opposing offense on 144 drives, only 2 teams had less. Because of this our offense only got the ball on 144 drives itself which was 2nd lowest. **We had the 2nd lowest opportunities to score on offense with a defense that gave up points at the highest rate for "possessions" in the league. That's not a winning formula.

Fangio is a Capers clone; not sure why some want him here after asking for a Capers fire. Also, not sure he’ll take a job where Capers was fired, he’s loyal like that.

Fangio came into NFL as Saints LB coach under Jim Mora, who brought him from USFL; Capers coached DBs on that staff. Capers left Saints and was DC for Steelers for 3 years. Then Capers was made HC of Carolina and he hired Fangio as DC. 4 years later Capers/Fangio got fired; whereupon Fangio was hired by Mora again, this time as DC, when Mora became Colts HC. After 3 years, Colts GM [Polian] ordered Mora to fire Fangio, Mora refused, so Polian fired the entire staff. Capers then got HC job for Texans and hired Fangio to be his DC again. 4 years later, they both got fired again and the best Fangio could do is oach LBs for Ravens under Billik, then John Harbaugh. After 4 years, Fangio left John Harbaugh in Baltimore to be DC at Stanford for Jim Harbaugh, incidentally Bill Polian’s kid was also hired by Jim Harbaugh. After 1 year, Harbaugh was hired by SF and he brought Fangio over as his DC.

Yes, SF’s D was elite for Fangio’s first 3 years. But, SF D starters only missed 8, 2, 10 games respectively and for only 1 game did Fangio have to resort to one 3rd stringer [who was actually a 2nd stringer on the other side]. Plus, SF spent more on D because they had a cheap QB and a run game that helped the D’s stats. In year 4, Kaepernick got paid, so less money for defense. The D suffered normal injury rates and the D was good but it fell from elite to #10. Then he and Harbaugh got fired.

In Chicago, Fox/Fangio are 0-6 as favorites. No one in history is even close to this record [2nd place goes to Dick Jeuron’s Bears who were 0-4 as favorites]. Fangio obviously played a role here.

Fangio’s Ds have stunk everywhere he went except in SF, though his 2 stints w/ Capers were with expansion teams; the Colts spent most of their coin on the Offense.

    Nick Rapone, DB Coach Arizona
Before he was an NFL assistant, Rapone was a defensive coordinator in college for a combined 21 years. He was a likely potential replacement for Todd Bowles, when he left the Cardinals to become the head coach of the New York Jets earlier this year but he continued to coach the Cardinals’ defensive backs. After three seasons in the NFL, Rapone will have learned the pro game well enough to make an easy transition to defensive coordinator.

    Mike Nolan, LB Coach Saints
Nolan's best years were mostly with the Ravens, but not entirely. The Jets ranked fourth in defensive DVOA in 2000, and Nolan defenses ranked between seventh and 12th for four straight years from 2009 to 2012.

Pats DB coaches Josh Boyer is considered a young defensive coach on the rise. Has 6 yrs in that program
