I wouldn't mind re-signing him for cheap, just in case for depth.

This won't happen with Ted Thompson. He likes his backups to be young guys. I can't think of a single backup player on this team who is not a very young player--maybe four-year vets at most.

Here is a link I would suspect most fans are unaware of, as it is somewhat ambiguous. From the Green Bay Packers official website:

Tauscher is a Wisconsin boy, but they won't sign him cheap, but they will sign him unless his injury is diagnosed as career threatening. Tauscher is a heck of a tackle and has done well. I would be pissed if Thompson didn't bring him back. But I also think it's time for them to start looking for replacements for both Tauscher and Clifton.

sad to hear about Tauscher, but this just has not been his year. maybe it's time for us to move on. sad, he's been my favorite lineman for years. oh well, there's no crying in football.

I agree that someone will sign him, but I doubt he will perform better anywhere else than he has here. Though the fans screamed bloody murder when Rivera and Wahle were cut, the fact is they accomplished virtually nothing after they were picked up by other teams.

Interesting link, dfosterf. For all the fans bitching that Thompson never does anything in free agency, here are the figures:

Of the 61 players currently on the Packers' roster (not including practice squad), 33 players (54%) were drafted, 23 (38%) were picked up as free agents, 2 (3%) were obtained in trades, and 3 (5%) were claimed off waivers.

The drafted players include many fan favorites: Donald Driver (currently the longest-tenured player on the team), Chad Clifton, Mark Tauscher, Aaron Kampmann, Aaron Rodgers, Will Blackmon, Mason Crosby, and Jordy Nelson.

However, plenty of Packers standouts came to Green Bay as free agents, including Colin Cole, Cullen Jenkins, Atari Bigby, Donald Lee, Tramon Williams, Charles Woodson, and Ryan Pickett.

The two players obtained through trades were, of course, Al Harris and Ryan Grant.

Jarrett Bush, Charlie Peprah, and John Kuhn were the players claimed off waivers.

So yes, it's been a mixed bag overall, but while it's obvious Ted Thompson loves to build through the draft, it is also apparent that he is not at all averse to picking up quality players through other means.

Note: Figures may not equal 100% due to rounding.

i think you're going to get some noise about your free agent numbers. many of those players are undrafted free agents. what the people want are unrestricted free agents, like woodson or pickett.

Charles Woodson, Ryan Pickett, and Brandon Chillar are indeed the only unrestricted free agents on this team.

I would be interested in a statistical discussion of how often undrafted free agents vs. unrestricted free agents make a significant impact on their teams over the duration of their contracts. I wouldn't be surprised if a higher percentage of undrafted free agents pan out overall, at least with respect to the value of their contracts.

HUH?!

Mark Tauscher, UFA, Green Bay Packers
Tauscher is a seventh round pick that became a success story. In his first season in the NFL, he was forced into a starting role because of an injury to another player. Tauscher isnt an elite player, but he is solid in his role as a starter and hasnt missed a game since 2002. Tauscher could be at the top of many teams lists because he could come cheaper than some of the other free agent lineman, but could be nearly or equally effective.
