We're still gripping about NINE freaking pounds?

Packers.com 316
NFL.com 316

Where the hell is this 307 coming from and is it not likely to gain/lose ten pounds as an athlete?

too.

I corrected a much-perpetuated and (obviously) widely-held belief at the time when I caught it. The fact that the Packers and the NFL retained his listed weight at 316 on the very day he was asked about it and stated that HE HAD JUST BEEN WEIGHED at 307 on April 26, 2009 should convince everyone by now that these players -probably all of them-- have their weight mis-represented for a myriad of reasons.

There WAS some controversy/discrepancy about this at the time of the draft, WHICH IS WHY HE WAS ASKED. His college listed him at 316 for his pro day, he played in an all-star game and was listed at 312, but SUBSEQUENT to those events, his college REVERTED his listed weight to 307...his playing weight- when he was drafted. This raised eyebrows, again, because he was one vote shy and was not invited to the combine.

Look for yourself:
(And a brief primer on why it might matter, according to a fella by the name of Sir Isaac Newton)

The question that SHOULD be asked is where did the 316 come from. Some "book cooking" , or "finger on a scale", something at his pro-day, and it has stuck. Again, he wasnt at the combine, so he didnt get weighed. He played at 307 in college and his college said he weighed 307 when he was drafted, and so did he. Many of the sites that track players statistics caught that not so little revelation and currently list him at the weight that both he and his alama mater said he was.

Eastern Michigan University on draft day:

Lang, a 6-foot-4 1/2, 307-pound lineman played in all 47 games during his four-year EMU career.

Newton's Second Law of Motion

Newton's Second Law of Motion tells us that
Force equals mass times acceleration.
You can tell how hard a moving object is going to hit by knowing how big it is (how much mass it has) and how fast it is speeding up (its acceleration). For instance, if the pitcher throws the ball to the catcher, how hard it hits the catcher's glove depends on how much mass the ball has and whether it is speeding up or slowing down when it gets to the glove. You can make something hit harder either by making it bigger or by throwing it faster.

Put another way, 316 going more faster is more better than 307 going more faster. He is pretty quick, and if you don't think 9 lbs matter, ask yourself this:

If he really weighed 316 instead of the 307, do you think he would have been at that combine last year? Do you think he would have lasted until the 4th round? I personally think he would have been there, and I also personally think he would have been drafted earlier. If you don't think it matters, just go ask Charles Brown and his agent THIS year. Lang's "claim to fame" is his versatility. At 307 and stubby arms that goes completely bye-bye. At 316, he is a better on paper RT, G, bigman C and a somewhat atypical LT.

I'm over it now, I heard he came in at 329 this year, all [strike]22 pounds[/strike] [strike]17 pounds[/strike] 13 pounds pure muscle mass, along with his arms growing an amazing 3 inches in length, making this discussion the forum equivalent of moot.

The teams (and individual players/agents) lie. They put whatever weight they think sounds good, plus or minus. One small example is the fact that not a single prospect at the OT position weighed the same as their listed pre-combine weight in this year's combine weigh-in. You would think that at least one would. See if they change any weights this year on the Packers.com roster. I say they might, but it will probably have nothing to do with the truth of the matter.

It might not matter, but what the hell else is there to bitch about during the off-season? --Plus I can throw in a piece of trivia.

According to this article Link  published in 2006, the average weight of NFL linemen has increased 62 pounds from the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 to 2006...Oh, and a fella by the name of F.J. Lang reportedly weighed as much as 1187 lbs during his lifetime, and T.J. Lang is still a right tackle, possibly a left guard, and the Tausch signing was a very good thing, imo. :tongue3:

I don't think the signing of Tauscher means the staff is or is not convinced of Lang's ability.

I think Ted Thompson went this route to assure that they are not relying on a somewhat unknown commodity on the outside again this year.

Tauscher proved to be the best RT last year and that's coming off the injury. He's shown he can still get it done. I expect Lang to be improved this year and certainly hope so because the question is can Mark play a full year at this point in his career?

Now we have that situation pretty well covered. I'm happy with that. They could also give Lang more reps over there to give Tauscher a break and allow him a better chance of getting through the season. IF Lang is good enough he will see his reps.

I think some of you are going to be awfully disappointed come draft day when we shore up our deficiencies in the secondary and leave the line for developmental lower draft picks. I'd say the earliest we take an OT will be round 3. I expect a trade out of round 1 to add a third round so we 4 picks in the top 90 instead of 3.

And Dfoster, nice anger, is there any way you'd be willing to video a rant like that and post it for us? I haven't had a good old ass chewing for many years.

I'm always wearing of high level OT picks anyways. Last time we had a 1st round OT pick was Ross Verba and he lasted a whopping 4 years with us. Before that, it was John Michels, who lasted a year and a half (24 games). Before that, it was Aaron Taylor who played in 2 SBs but his knees destroyed his career. Then we go all the way back to T*** M******* in '89.

Not trying to piss off Foster here. I'm merely being a historian. You're generally better off picking skill positions in your first and second round and developing linemen with 3rd round picks and later. I hate speaking for Ted Thompson because he's as unpredictable as they come, but I'm under the impression he thinks the same way.

But then you get a Chad Clifton in it all... 44th pick.. and he anchors the left side of the line for 10 years.

Well we did just have a 2nd rounder man the LT spot for Ten years, and counting maybe.

If there is a worthy LT sitting at 23, there is no doubt Ted will jump. If not he will look elsewhere, all time he will be exploring happening.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

Pissed off? I'm not pissed off.

If say, Trent Williams somehow fell to 23 and we didn't draft him...

Well then- I WILL be pissed off. You might say I'd go ballistic in that scenario.
I will probably (for planning purposes) start my bitching and ranting for Ted to move up in the draft right about at 17 IF Williams is still there... I know how wound up I get...

I disagree with that "better off picking skill positions early" thing Zombie has going, but I'm not pissed off about it.

Zero2Cool (21-Apr) : Maye needs to be AFC
Mucky Tundra (21-Apr) : Not liking the idea of the Vikings getting Maye
Zero2Cool (21-Apr) : Vikings HC joked that he may or may not have sent flowers to Bob Kraft. That's where rumor came from.

dfosterf (21-Apr) : One playbook to my knowledge. I was shooting for facetious.
beast (20-Apr) : I'm not sure they have different playbooks for different OL positions, and Dillard run blocking is supposedly worse than his pass blocking..
