Ive watched 5 games in the past week (from last season).

2nd vikes game, 2nd chicago game, dallas, 49ners and the steelers game.

I saw many people this offseason getting on about bigby and how he isnt that good and we need a safety to replace him.

some comments -

- while I do agree that sucked when he went out and we had to use rookies and backups to replace him and how that basically fucked up a few of our games.

- what I saw in those 6 games was a dude that would leap off the ground and go shoulder first into a receiver; and this was how he tackled them.
The dude would hit hard - and often the receivers would be slow to getting up or hurt. Tell me you wouldnt be gun shy going up for a pass if you knew bigby was coming to be laying one of those hits into you.

Now I know I havnt reviewed all the games from last season (damn new job keeping me from what is important ;)

but I got to say I like how bigby played. I do agree we need a reliable backup safety thou for when collins or bigby goes down.

Or maybe someone that can play safety or corner when needed.

Mays looks like he could possibly with his physical stature; heck put him on TEs or something also (but who knows maybe his coverage skills arnt that good).

- What I did notice in those games was that our linebackers arnt that good at covering even thou they are supposed too.

It isn't that Bigby sucks per se, it's that he has limitations in his coverage abilities. I think you identified a big problem with the linebackers, and because that problem exists, you need safeties that are outstanding in coverage. My problem is more with Uncle Ted, because he has not brought in enough competition to unseat Bigby. For what it has cost us for Bigby's services, he has played adequately.

Now you take someone like Sharper who jumps passing lanes and gets a very good amount of picks, but have you every seriously watched him in run support? The guy will pick the wrong hole 75% of the time. And then, when it is time for one on one with the running back he will do his matador routine and whiff. Darren Sharper will be in the Hall of Fame some day, but for me, he is just another player that can't tackle. Maybe they'll make a special wing for these guys and call it "Prime Time" with Darlene and Deion the main attraction.

How many times does Bigby go for the big hit and miss? Or when he takes the wrong angles on coverage? The main thing is the guy can't stay healthy and he is prone to alot of stupid penalties.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

How many times does Bigby go for the big hit and miss?

If your asking for missed tackles, then the answer is 6.

Interestingly enough, our Pro-bowler Nick Collins also missed 6 tackles. Moreover, Ed Reed missed 6 tackles too.

The Safety Antrel Rolle, who signed a huge contract this offseason with the Giants, missed 16 (yes, 16) tackles.

Comparatively, Bigby didn't miss a heck of a lot of tackles.

Or when he takes the wrong angles on coverage?

Bigby is credited with giving up 17 receptions for 158 yards out of being targeted 35 times - which results in 48.6 % of completions against.

Collins: 46.9 % completions against (15 of 32) for 306 yards.
Reed: 66.7 % completions against (14 of 21) for 142 yards.
Rolle: 63.4 % completions against (26 of 41) for 348 yards.

The main thing is the guy can't stay healthy and he is prone to alot of stupid penalties.

Bigby played in 90.5% of the defensive snaps last year. He had only 1 penalty all of last year: week 3 against Cleveland.

Collins: 92.3 % (1 penalty)
Reed: 98.7 % (3 penalties)
Rolle: 95.0 % (2 penalties)

Here, Bigby does lack compared to other players but still 90% of the defensive snaps is nothing to sneeze at. He also gave up only 1 penalty all of last year.

All stats courtesy pro-football focus.

You know, if someone starts throwing things out there randomly - especially in question form - without any evidence whatsoever, it raises red flags. It's true in the business world, in academia, in legal realm.... it should be a cause for concern on here, too.

There is a reason why I compared Bigby's stats to other Free Safties - to show that compared to those who are supposedly better in coverage, Bigby still stacks up favorably.

He has his shortcomings, but there is talent there that can be worked with. I remember reading a post a couple of days back that said something to the effect of "get a pass-rush going, and Bigby will look like gold again"... I agree.

We certainly need to sure up the depth at the position, though.

stat pwnage.

but seriously, our LBers cannot cover well.

Hawk led them with 2 picks (SEA , BAL), and only 1 of them took any skill.

Injury prone....can't contribute on the sidelines. And while he makes some nice plays, he is also exposed fairly regularly in coverage.

Interesting stats AADP. If Bigby was that good, who the hell was it that stank up our coverage? Tramon?
