Jim Brown says he won't attend Ring of Honor ceremony: 'I do not need validation'

Web Page Name

EREA, Ohio -- Jim Brown has informed Browns President Mike Holmgren that he will not participate in the club's Ring of Honor ceremony on Sept. 19.

In a letter delivered on Monday and obtained independently by The Plain Dealer, Brown states that while he had no formal contract as executive advisor with the Browns, he believes his agreement with owner Randy Lerner was violated because a clause in it stated he would answer to no one but Lerner.

Brown disclosed that Holmgren offered him a salary of $100,000 for an opportunity to serve the club as, in Browns interpretation, a greeter ... a mascot ... a person that would represent special events by his physical presence.

"All of those things that you offered me would be controlled by you," Brown wrote.

He turned down the position in a subsequent letter to Lerner and Holmgren.

Brown said that he viewed the press conference announcing the creation of the Ring of Honor last week.

"Your most powerful statement about me was that, and I must laugh, one monkey don't stop the show," Brown wrote.

Holmgrens actual statement from the Aug. 26 press conference was this: I trust Jim will be there and I hope hes there because he is a part of this. Hes part of the history of this place, a big part of it. Any way it comes down, its going to be a wonderful day. Its going to be a celebration ... Its going to be a great celebration for all of us and the 16 families on that day and I trust he will be part of it.

Brown concluded:

"I've never danced in the end zone, I always gave the ball to the referee, so you should know I don't dance. Also Mike, I don't hang out on the Westside of town. I'm an Eastside guy. I play my golf at Highland Golf Course.

"I don't go to the Hall of Fame ceremonies, except on occasions, like when Gene Hickerson was inducted, and I felt very proud to be with Bobby Mitchell and Leroy Kelly in showing our respect for his great contribution, and for helping us become great players.

"I don't have any trophies in my home on display. I don't claim to be the best at anything, and I emphatically do not need validation from any man, so I will not participate in your Ring of Honor."

Holmgren responded through a team spokesperson. Jim got back to me as he said he would and informed me he would not be attending the Cleveland Browns Ring of Honor ceremony.

So Mike showed Mr Brown who is boss???

Sorry,

Jim Brown is anything but a humble guy. He is an asshole, racist, and wifebeater. He feels he is above being there.

He is so self centered that he thinks the whole thing is for him when it is really for the fans. If he figured that out, he would be there because the fans would want him there.

While Holmgren made no mention of it, you will notice that Brown insinuated that Holmgran referred/ thought of him as a monkey.

While I have no respect for Jim Brown the person, he was the best football player....... ever.

I think he is confusing honor with pride.

I've mixed feelings about Brown.

1. Greatest running back ever.
2. But there's the domestic violence stuff Tripp pointed out.
3. Like the way he's put his beliefs to work in cities, even calling out today's stars for "not putting back".
4. But defines things too much by race.
5. Like the way he refuses to march in lockstep with corporate NFL.
6. But tends to think "my way is only legitimate way".

Despite the real human flaws of 6, and especially 2 and 4, I think I'd still take Brown over Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Brett Favre, Jerry Rice, and most other celebrity athletes. He's fucked up in some ways, but he has an integrity and commitment to something other than himself and his sport that those others don't. Citizenship is more than the size of charity checks you write.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Domestic violence wipes out any respect I could ever give a person, no matter their achievements. Jim Brown is a bitter turd and he doesn't deserve the Cleveland fans who bleed for their teams.

Any person that has to come out and claim how humble he is is as arogant as any he is trying to seperate himself from. I think Brown needs to read a certain piece by John Walter Wayland.

Thus is yet another reason I'd like to bury my head in the sand and not know anything about football players as humans.

If I was 20 years older, I might call Jim Brown the best player ever. The best player I've ever seen was Jerry Rice. He wasn't the flashiest, he just produced every single year he played.

What I heard about Brown as a player is all second-hand so I intentionally say "post 1976" when I say "best ever." Would have loved to see Brown, but more so, would have loved to see the 60s Packers as a team. I wasn't born yet.

So many of these old football players are bitter. I think part of it is that they made so little money compared to players nowadays, and for players like Brown, a black guy who came of age during the 50s and 60s, there is a lot of racial bitterness as well.

He's also an egomaniac, which I guess kind of goes along with being a great athlete. But Brown makes an ass of himself more than most of the others do, and this is a prime example.

Martha Careful (18h) : 1. this is true of all our linemen. 2. His run block is fine. 3. If all OL played like he has, we would win SB.
beast (19h) : Meyers pass blocking is really good, his run blocking is really not.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : Packers have claimed DE Spencer Waege off of waivers from the 49ers and waived DT Rodney Mathews.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : And the OL protections seem to be good.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : I really don't know lol. I don't see him getting blown up.
Zero2Cool (9-May) : -3 buwahhhahaaha
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : 4th
Zero2Cool (9-May) : because he's 1st
Mucky Tundra (9-May) : Myers isn't even the 3rd best C on the roster atm
Martha Careful (9-May) : I am not sure I understand the Myers hate. He was consistently our third best lineman. RG and LT were worse.
beast (9-May) : Just saying I don't think moving Myers would help Myers.
beast (9-May) : Center is usually considered the easiest position physically if you can handle the snap stuff.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : Bust it is then
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Context. Sounds like Myers won't be cross-trained. C or bust.
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : @BookOfEli_NFL Packers pass game coordinator, Jason Vrable said that Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks shared a placed in Florida while train
Mucky Tundra (8-May) : For now...
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers go about evaluating their "best five," OL coach Luke Butkus makes on thing clear: "Josh Myers is our center."
beast (8-May) : Though I'm a bit surprised letting go of CBs, I thought we needed more not less
beast (8-May) : It was confusing with two DB Anthony Johnson anyways
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers actually had Ray Lewis on the phone.
Zero2Cool (8-May) : Packers wanted to draft Ray Lewis. Ravens stole him.
Martha Careful (6-May) : Happy 93rd Birthday to the Greatest Baseball Player of All-Time...Willie Mays
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Walter Stanely's son
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : and released CB Anthony Johnson and DL Deandre Johnson and waived/injured WR Thyrick Pitts (thigh-rick).
buckeyepackfan (6-May) : The Green Bay Packers have signed WR Julian Hicks, OL Lecitus Smith (luh-SEET-us) and WR Dimitri Stanley
Zero2Cool (6-May) : Petty, but it's annoying me how the NFL is making the schedule release an event.
Mucky Tundra (4-May) : @mattschneidman Matt LaFleur on how he tore his pec: “Got in a fight with the bench press. I lost.”
Zero2Cool (3-May) : Jordan Love CAN sign an extension as of today. Might tak weeks/months though
TheKanataThrilla (3-May) : Packers decline 5th year option for Stokes
Mucky Tundra (3-May) : @ProFootballTalk Jaylen Warren: Steelers' special teams coach has discussed Justin Fields returning kicks.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Season officially ending tonight for Bucks ... sad face
Zero2Cool (2-May) : Giannis Antetokounmpo is listed as out for tonight's game.
dfosterf (2-May) : Surprisingly low initially is my guess cap wise, but gonna pay the piper after that
dfosterf (2-May) : The number on Love is going to be brutal.
Zero2Cool (2-May) : May 3rd. Extension day for Jordan Love. (soonest)
Zero2Cool (1-May) : USFL MVP QB Alex McGough moved to WR. So that's why no WR drafted!
earthquake (1-May) : Packers draft starters at safety ever few years. Collins, Clinton-Dix, Savage
beast (1-May) : Why can't the rookies be a day 1 starter? Especially when we grabbed 3 of them at the position
dfosterf (1-May) : Not going to be shocked if Gilmore goes to the Lions.
dfosterf (1-May) : I hear you dhazer, but my guess would be Gilmore Colts and Howard Vikings from what little has been reported.
Mucky Tundra (30-Apr) : S learn from McKinney who learns from Hafley who learns from the fans. Guaranteed Super Bowl
Zero2Cool (30-Apr) : could*
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Safeties should learn from Xavier.
dhazer (29-Apr) : And what about grabbing a Gilmore or Howard at CB ? Those are all Free Agents left
dhazer (29-Apr) : out of curiosity do they try and sign Simmons or Hyde to let these young safeties learn from, they can't be day 1 starters.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : I miss having Sam Shields.
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : Not that he's making excuses, just pointing it out
Zero2Cool (29-Apr) : That's for dang sure. Make our erratic kicker have no excuse!
packerfanoutwest (28-Apr) : having a great long snapper is gold
Zero2Cool (28-Apr) : LaFleur looking like he had some weight. Coachin will do that lol
