Seriously.. taking a couple minutes to go through extra security is that insulting.. really.

Hell with my leg on every commercial flight I have to go through it, card or not, go through the explosive test and the whole 9 yards.. and I have never found it insulting.

It is a hassle, yes.. but how else should a system be setup so that there are precautions in place.

Don't like it.. don't fly commercial..

If they drop the precautions and the next flight gets hijacked.. we will all feel just a little foolish because we are too righteous to go through security.. this is public transportation.. with the ability to cause much more destruction if overtaken.

A extra hour in your travel really isn't that big of deal.. at least in my opinion.

Having to present my passport and other documentation every few steps . . . having my nipples and balls touched at the gate . . . having every single item in my bag removed for the world to see (and left in a pile, of course, for me to replace, after I'd spent hours carefully packing) . . . being interrogated with questions that are no one's business and worse, imply that I must have had nefarious motives for staying a month out of the country . . . Yes, these things are unacceptable. None of them happened to me anywhere else in Europe, except when I was returning to and had landed on the soil of my own country.

No, no, no, no, no

By Stephen Hough Last updated: July 7th, 2010

I spent yesterday morning queueing at one of the ugliest buildings in London the American Embassy (ironically now owned by Qatari Diar Real Estate).

UserPostedImage

Occupying one side of Grosvenor Square in Mayfair, this squat, Sixties box has no redeeming features that I could discern, and since 9/11 it has become the place rivaling Madame Tussauds for snaking lines of waiting tourists although here the tourists are wanting to leave the UK. You are instructed to allow three hours for the process which involves waiting in four separate lines: one to get in the building, one to get your forms stamped, one to have your interview, and one to pay for the courier service to return your passport. This is only mildly uncomfortable for those who live in London, but for those living outside it requires an overnight stay. No bulky bags permitted well, fair enough. But also no mobile phones or any electronic device (including car keys) are allowed in the building. A few years ago Id forgotten about my Palm PDA (the old model without any wireless capability) and, after waiting to get into the building for an hour and a half, I was turned away at the x-ray screening and sent to a small shop a couple of streets away where they will store such items for a fee. Fortunately I could return again to the front of the queue. But then when I got to the presentation of my forms it turned out that my photo was not correct in some small detail. I had to leave again and go out to a chemist where they would take American-style photos there was no working photo machine in the building. My expression on those images was wild and furious but they were approved.

Some of the questions in the application form are quite extraordinary; and, as necessary as screening-out such people might be, I cant imagine anyone answering yes to any of them (although question 6 is open to all kinds of fascinating interpretations):

đŸ‡±đŸ‡źAre you coming to the United States to engage in prostitution or unlawful commercialized vice or have you been engaged in prostitution or procuring prostitutes within the past 10 years?[/li]
đŸ‡±đŸ‡źHave you ever been involved in, or do you seek to engage in, money laundering?[/li]
đŸ‡±đŸ‡źDo you have a mental or physical disorder that poses or is likely to pose a threat to the safety or welfare of yourself or others?[/li]
đŸ‡±đŸ‡źDo you seek to engage in espionage, sabotage, export control violations, or any other illegal activity while in the United States?[/li]
đŸ‡±đŸ‡źDo you seek to engage in terrorist activities while in the United States or have you ever engaged in terrorist activities?[/li]
đŸ‡±đŸ‡źHave you, while serving as a government official, been responsible for or directly carried out, at any time, particularly severe violations of religious freedom?[/li]
đŸ‡±đŸ‡źHave you committed, ordered, incited, assisted, or otherwise participated in extrajudicial killings, political killings, or other acts of violence?[/li]
đŸ‡±đŸ‡źHave you ever committed, ordered, incited, assisted, or otherwise participated in torture?[/li]
đŸ‡±đŸ‡źHave you ever ordered, incited, committed, assisted, or otherwise participated in genocide?[/li]
đŸ‡±đŸ‡źHave you ever or do you intend to provide financial assistance or other support to terrorists or terrorist organizations?[/li]

Oh, and a final irony, a notice by the courier desk as I arranged to have my passport returned to me: American Express cards not accepted. Perhaps they only take Visa?

When I learn that self-professedly "freedom-loving Americans" have no problem with measures like these, I find myself very worried for the future of our country.

Citizens of Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, and Communist China were all convinced they lived in free countries too.

As I said, if I've done something suspicious, treat me as a suspected criminal. If I haven't, leave me the hell alone.

I'm with Rourke.

Fear is a terrible thing. In their willingness to accede to restriction of the freedom of others (including their fellow Americans), Americans since 9/11 have made Osama bin Laden look like a genius. I mean, come on, when someone can point, as Rourke has, to the fact that Europeans have a better attitude in this regard, something is seriously wrong here.

Let me ask four questions:

Suppose, my next time through the security screen at USA airport X, I do the usual, politely putting everything including my shoes and my belt and my goddamned 3-1-1 bag on the conveyer belt. However, instead of being my meek sheep imitator, I also loudly complain about the stupidity of TSA, its rules, its treatment of ordinary USA citizens as criminals, etc. In short, I articulate everything that Rourke has, but I do it *at the security checkpoint*, and in a loud enough voice that people in nearby lines will also hear it.

Oh, yes, and I have happened to forget to trim the dark beard I've been letting grow rather shaggy over the last few months. And sticking out of my carryon bag is the book I'm currently reading, it's title (Arab Seafaring, a book whose subtitle ("In the Indian Oean in Ancient and Early Medieval Times.") is only going to be visible if someone opens the book to the title page.

Here's my four questions:
1. What should happen to me?
2. What will happen to me?
3. What will my fellow "passengers" say/think/do about #1 and #2?
4. What *should* those fellow passengers say/think/do?
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Mucky Tundra (46m) : With LVN that is; need to see what happens in the next practice
Mucky Tundra (47m) : beast, reading about what happened, it sounded like one of those "two guys collide and are moving slow afterwards" type of deals
beast (2h) : I believe Musgrave has been injured every single season since at least a Sophomore in highschool
packerfanoutwest (5h) : Matt LaFleur: “Highly unlikely” Jordan Love plays more this preseason
dfosterf (6h) : Doubs, Savion Williams, LVN, Musgrave all banged up to one degree or another, missing one here I forget
Zero2Cool (8h) : RB Tyrion Davis-Price is signing with the Green Bay Packers.
Zero2Cool (8h) : zero help, dominated. preseason
beast (9h) : QB Jordan Love has surgery
beast (9h) : Martha said Morgan had a lot of help, I didn't watch the OL so I can't say.
Zero2Cool (10-Aug) : Packers LT Jordan Morgan did not allow a single pressure across 23 pass-blocking snaps vs. Jets last night, per PFF
Mucky Tundra (10-Aug) : With buckeye and the reasonable couple, we're currently sitting at 10
buckeyepackfan (10-Aug) : Just posted to re-up on our FFL.
Zero2Cool (10-Aug) : If healthy after, then thats all I care. Well, no drops would be nice
wpr (10-Aug) : I made it through the 1st Q.
dfosterf (10-Aug) : Just gotta figure out how.
dfosterf (10-Aug) : Could have been a worse start, so there is that.
beast (10-Aug) : Yeah, someone tell the Packers football season has started, seems like they weren't ready for it
Mucky Tundra (10-Aug) : Sooooooo many penalties
Mucky Tundra (10-Aug) : It may only be preseason, but this game is a trip to the dentist
Zero2Cool (10-Aug) : Packers do bad -- FREAK OUT!!!!!!
Zero2Cool (10-Aug) : Packers do good -- eh only preseason
dfosterf (10-Aug) : Well that half was fun

Mucky Tundra (9-Aug) : THE GREEN BAY PACKERS ARE PLAYING FOOTBALL TONIGHT!!!!!! THIS IS NOT A DRILL!!!!
Zero2Cool (9-Aug) : Woo-hoo
TheKanataThrilla (9-Aug) : NFL Network is broadcasting the game tonight, but not in Canada. Not sure why as no local television is showing the game.
beast (8-Aug) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Zero- Did you see what I posted about Voice of Reason and his wife? She posted over at fleaflicker that they are both "In"
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : Well, not crazy, it makes sense. Crazy I didn't notice/find it earlier
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : it's crazy how one stored procedure to get data bogged everything down for speed here
dfosterf (7-Aug) : to herd cats or goldfish without a bowl. They reminded me of the annual assembly of our fantasy league
dfosterf (7-Aug) : out on a field trip, outfitting them with little yellow smocks. Most of the little folk were well behaved, but several were like trying
dfosterf (7-Aug) : Yesterday my wife and I spent the afternoon on the waterfront here in Alexandria, Va. A daycare company took about 15 three/four year olds
wpr (7-Aug) : seems faster. yay
dfosterf (7-Aug) : Wife of reason posted on the in/out thread on fleaflicker that both she and vor are in
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : This page was generated in 0.135 seconds.
Mucky Tundra (7-Aug) : Tbh, I can never tell the difference in speed unless it's completely shitting the bed
Zero2Cool (7-Aug) : Sure does feel like site is more snappy
Zero2Cool (6-Aug) : I thought that was the Lions OL
Mucky Tundra (6-Aug) : Travis Glover placed on IR; seasons over for him
